Functions and Mission
The Guardian defined the work of the Hands and their Auxiliary Board in successive letters from 1951 to 1957.
“Hour now ripe to take long, inevitably deferred step in conformity with provisions of ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s Testa- ment .. . to appoint first contingent of Hands of the Cause of God...”
“Members of august body invested in conformity with ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s Testament with two-fold sacred function, propagation and preservation of the Faith of Baha’u’llah, destined to assume individually in the course of time the direction of institutions paralleling those revolving around the Universal House of Justice, supreme legislative body of the Baha’i World... ”
“Call upon . . . Hands of five continents . . . to in- augurate historic mission to appointment of five Aux- iliary Boards, one for each continent, nine members each, who will, as their adjuncts or deputies, and work- ing in conjunction with the various National Assemblies
. . assist, through periodic, systematic visits to Baha’i centers, in the efficient, prompt execution of the twelve
projected national plans.”’
“Urge initiation of five Continental Baha’i Funds which . . . will increasingly facilitate the discharge of the functions assigned to the Boards.”
“To its newly assumed responsibility to assist Na- tional Spiritual Assemblies . . . in its specific purpose of effectively prosecuting the World Spiritual Crusade, the primary obligation to watch over and insure pro- tection to the Baha’f World community, in close col- laboration with these same National Assemblies, is now added.”
“So marvellous a progress . . . necessitates . . . yet another step . . involving the designation of yet another contingent of the Hands of the Cause of God . .. Chief Stewards of Baha’u’ll4h’s embryonic World Commonwealth...”
“This latest addition . . . calls for . . . the appoint- ment by these same Hands, in each continent separate- ly, of an additional Auxiliary Board, equal in member- ship to the existing one, and charged with the specific duty of watching over the security of the Faith...”
Plans
From year to year the American Hands consider the expressed needs of the various National Assemblies of the Western Hemisphere and, in consultation with the Board Members, endeavor to assign teaching missions capable of extending the utmost possible assistance to the prosecution of the World Crusade. In addition, Members of the Board for Protection are dispatched for investigation of any reported threats to the unity of the Faith from enemies within or without the Cause.
The Hands correspond only with Board Members and National Assemblies. Applications for services of Board Members are to be reported to the Hands through the National Assemblies of the particular areas. After a mission is decided, the Board Member
develops an itinerary and schedule of meetings and conferences through the National or Area Teaching Committee, Members of the Board for Protection can also render teaching services. All Board Members re- port directly to the Hands on the results of their mis- sions and investigations, and the Hands share relevant portions of these reports with the National Assembly concerned.
The American Hands and their Auxiliary Boards can
collaborate with the National Assemblies in the con-
duct of special conferences with the believers. The
Hands also report vital matters to the Hands of the
Cause in the Holy Land.
