NSA Announces Nation-wide Institute Series Two Week Ends in November
The National Spiritual Assembly is calling a series of week-end institutes for registered believers, adults and youth, to be conducted by members of the Auxiliary Boards and of the National Spiritual Assembly on the dates and at the places listed below. Since it is necessary to send this information to print before the host cities have completed the details a few minor changes may be necessary; therefore the friends are requested to watch their area teaching committee bulletins and to keep in touch with the nearest assemblies regarding the exact location of the meeting places.
The purpose of these institutes is to discuss and clarify with as many believers as possible certain subjects that will help us all to understand better the World Order of Bahá’u’lláh, the nature of Bahá’í administration and the institutions of the Faith, and how we can most effectively achieve the remaining goals of the World Crusade, including consolidation of our home front.
Each institute will consist of three sessions. The first on Saturday afternoon will begin at 2:00 p.m. and continue to 5:30 p.m. The evening session beginning at eight o’clock will~continue the afternoon’s agenda, or it may be one of fellowship for the believers, their families, friends and contacts, or it may be a public meeting — whichever the host city decides. The last session will begin at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning and continue until 1:00 p.m. Further details will be announced in the area teaching bulletins together with information regarding hotels, motels and other places where overnight accommodations will be available.
All believers are urged to make every possible effort to attend the institute nearest them and to take advantage of this opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the teachings regarding the institutions so laboriously erected by the beloved Guardian during his lifetime.
In order to gain maximum benefit from the discussions the friends should come prepared with as much knowledge as possible of the subject matter on which the agenda will be based. Therefore, the National Spiritual Assembly recommends study in advance of the following literature:
The Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá
Trustees of the Merciful
Declaration of Trust and By-Laws
Messages of Shoghi Effendi (1950-1957)
The Master’s last Tablet to America
(Bahá’í World Faith, pages 427-438)
Please make sure that you have current identifica tion cards to present when registering.

State Conventions to Be Held December 4
At its Labor Day week-end meeting the National Spiritual Assembly appointed the State Convention Committees who will make the necessary local arrangements for the annual state conventions which will take place on Sunday, December 4. Every adult believer is requested to make plans now to attend, but if impossible to be present to make sure that he votes for the number of delegates to the 1961 National Convention apportioned to his state.
The Convention Call, ballots and voting lists -will be sent directly to each believer about the middle of November. In the meantime, please watch the area teaching committee bulletins for announcements as to the city in the state where the convention will take place.
May every state show the largest attendance and the largest number of believers voting than in any
past year. —NATIONAL SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLY
[Page 2]National Assembly Heartened by Community Action
A vigorous, active spirit is permeating the national community. It is evident in the enthusiasm and persistent effort of the new assemblies and smaller communities. It is specifically reflected in the responses of eighty-nine assemblies, out of a total one hundred thirty-nine, who are receiving encouragement and direction through the newly-initiated guidance program inaugurated by the National Spiritual Assembly in May of this year. These responses have been deeply heartening to the National Assembly as they face the remaining work of the World Crusade.
The plan for_ strengthening the existing new and small assemblies has included thus far several communicatrons with suggestions, guidance, material, and encouragement to initiate local goals and actions; announcement of a program to be carried out by the American National Teaching Committee to select and schedule circuit teachers for giving assistance in teaching, deepening, and functioning; and publication in Bahá’í News Supplement of certain aids in these activities. The plan, as the year progresses, will include further assistance, such as institutes or conferences.
The reports of activities and plans of the friends have strongly demonstrated that these small communities are exerting great effort, with efficiency, and with devotion and self-sacrifice and an intense desire to serve the Faith.
There is a mounting conviction within whole communities that new doors will open, that a new strength is manifested through the power of united prayer. Many have undertaken a definite program of prayer in which all members of the community take part. Thus, the American nation, though outwardly facing, in Shoghi Effendi’s words, “tribulations, on a scale unprecedented in its history,” has within it dedicated souls who fill practically every moment of the day with prayer, having faith in the spiritual destiny they are called upon to fulfill in this hour.
The assemblies who have reported up to this time have initiated a wide variety of activities embracing allrphases of teaching. Public meetings have attracted good audiences. They have been well planned and presented, and have included plans for follow-up teaching of those who become sufficiently interested. The
Race Amity Day Observances as reported earlier are,
good examples of the public proclamation program. Numerous extension teaching projects have been started, not only for assistance to the goal-groups, but also for other smaller groups and isolated friends, aiming at raising the number of groups for potential assemblies.
The fireside, both personal and community, continues to be the most widespread and effective means of teaching. Some communities have several firesides in actioh. In many instances, if individual members do not or cannot undertake this important function, the assembly itself has done so, realizing that it is vital that opportunity be open at all times for this medium of teaching which is essential in winning and guiding the inquirers who have an interest in the Faith.
Perhaps nothing we do takes as much faith, prayer, and genuine effiort as persevering in the Cause of God, but we know the beloved Guardian’s words will not fail us. Shoghi Effendi said: “Success will crown the

efforts of the friends on the home-front when they meditate on the teachings, pray fervently for divine confirmations for their work, study the teachings so they may carry the spirit to the seeker, and then actand above all persevere in action. When these steps are followed, and the teaching work carried on sacrificially and with devoted enthusiasm, the Faith will spread rapidly.” (Bahá’í News, June 1956)
Bahá’í Children Win
Prizes in County Fair
The Bahá’í children class of Warren Township, Gages Lake, 111., entered two exhibits in the Lake County Fair in July, winning first and second prizes in their categories. The entry that was awarded the first prize was a mural with the quotations from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh that appear over the entrances and in the alcoves of the Bahá’í House of Worship and appropriate cut-outs of colored paper.

—U.S. NATIONAL SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLY
August contributions from individuals, assemblies and groups amounting to $20,923.84 represent a moderate improvement over July but we are substantially below May and June and most months of the previous fiscal year. More important, they account for only 67% of the monthly budget. If we had not received a special non-recurring gift of $10,000.00 from the sale of real estate by an assembly, we would again be in a serious financial condition. As it is for the four months, May through August, total contributions, including special gifts and receipts from bequests are $10,800.00 short of the pro-rata budget, a slightly larger figure than last month.
The Joint Deputization Fund has received approximately $35,000.00 from American believers, including an additional gift of $10,000.00 from the assembly referred to above. This is a splendid showing. It is important, however, that receipts continue at this rate, for pioneers for Europe and Latin America have already been budgeted requiring living expenses of approximately $15,000.00 per month, and additional pioneers urgently needed will undoubtedly increase this figure substantially during the next few months. These commitments will continue for the balance of the World Crusade.

NSA of Central and East Africa
Appeals for Pioneer Couple
The National Spiritual Assembly of Central and East Africa has sent an urgent appeal for an energetic, self-supporting Bahá’í couple who can devote their full time to the tremendous task of consolidation of the Faith in that part of the world, particularly in Uganda. There are about 11,000 enrolled believers but their knowledge is scanty, the majority of them do not speak English, literature is scarce, and there is great need for help in training the Africans to carry on administrative work.
At the present time all of the administrative work falls on the shoulders of the twenty-four pioneers and a small number of Africans. Only four of the pioneers are able to devote their full time to the Faith. Thus there is great need for at least one couple with an independent income who could own a car and travel around the area, teaching at the many week-end schools and conferences and who could spend some time at the national P_Ia;iratu’l-Quds helping with the production of material essential to consolidation activities. Generally speaking, the climate is pleasant and there are the usual facilities for living.
Any Bahá’ís who are interested should write to the National Spiritual Assembly who will put them in touch with the National Assembly for Central and East Africa for additional information.
Special Announcement Concerning Dedication of Kampala Temple, January I3-I5, 1961
Those planning to attend the historic dedication of the Mother Temple of Africa are requested to so inform the National Spiritual Assembly of Central and East Africa as soon as possible. Please write directly to the Secretary, Philip Hainsworth, P.O. Box 2662, Kampala, Uganda, East Africa.
When notifying Mr. Hainsworth of your plans to attend, please inform him of time of your arrival in Kampala and length of stay. We also suggest you request information as to type and price of room accommodations available and then make firm reservations in whatever manner is suggested by him.
It is important for the host assembly to receive as much advance information as possible concerning the friends who may attend from the U.S. In their behalf we urge your co-operation.
Interracial Committee Gains Publicity
The Baton Rouge Herald, a new Negro newspaper of that city, carried an item and picture regarding the appointment of three local members of the Bahá’í World Faith to the National Bahá’í Interracial Teaching Committee by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the United States. The article reported the functions of the committee, and stated that the committee expects to meet “in consultation with persons interested in the problems of interracial teachings as well as with Bahá’í communities and individuals concerned with bringing the Bahá’í teachings to the Negroes throughout the United States.”
