‘Abdu’l-Bahá (1844–1921)

See also biography, media. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, whose birth name was Abbas Effendi, was the eldest son of Bahá’u’lláh, founder of the Bahá’í Faith. Born in Persia, he was swiftly subjected to lifelong imprisonment due to the central role of his family in the religion of his father. He took the name ‘Abdu’l-Bahá (meaning "Servant of Bahá") to both honor and clarify his subsidiary relationship to his father. He was appointed his father's heir, and sole authorized interpreter of the scriptures of this religion. Through his life he wrote several books, gave many talks and interviews which were transcribed, and wrote many letters of encouragement, exposition and explanation. He passed away in 1921, having travelled extensively outside of the Middle-East. He was succeeded by his grandson, Shoghi Effendi.
