NATIONAL SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLY[edit]

FIRST PIONEER REPORT[edit]

The National Spiritual Assembly is happy to announce the first American pioneers to arrive at their posts under the World Crusade.

Mrs. Rose Perkal arrived on Kodiak Island, Territory of Alaska, July 8.

Mr. and Mrs. William B. Sears and Michael Sears arrived in Johannesburg, Union of South Africa, July 18.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Gulick, Jr. and infant son, Mrs. Shawkat ‘Alí Faraju’lláh and Miss Ella M. Bailey arrived in Tripoli July 20.

These first Americans to reach their goals are but a slight indication of the stream of pioneers who either are now enroute or are making final preparations to leave in the coming weeks. Pioneering is now the spiritual challenge placed before the conscience of each individual believer.

—NATIONAL SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLY

Correction[edit]

The National Assembly statement on page 2 of the June BAHÁ’Í NEWS has given the impression that American pioneers are not to settle in virgin areas if pioneers from other countries are already there. This is not the case. The Guardian wishes American pioneers to go to every one of the one hundred and thirty-one virgin areas. This is a spiritual opportunity and obligation given us by the Master in the Divine Plan, American pioneers are free to settle anywhere in these new areas.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS[edit]

AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND[edit]

Jubilee Convention[edit]

The Jubilee Convention of the Bahá’ís of Australia and New Zealand took place from Friday, April 30 to Sunday, May 3. Consolidation and Preparation was the theme of the Convention, according to the keynote speaker, who said:

“Our task is to consolidate the goals already won and to prepare ourselves for the 10 Year Plan which will take us beyond the confines of our country and bring us into close contact with the rest of the world. The 10 Year Plan will call for great courage, fortitude and sacrifice, but our reward, on its achievement, will be glorious beyond compare.”

Addressing the Convention, Clara Dunn, Hand of the Cause, said:

“My message to you is to love each other like the Master won everyone with his love ... if we do not cultivate this love we cannot succeed. We must have Bahá’í love and the Bahá’í spirit.”

The Convention was a particularly happy one and concentration on achieving the goals of the Global Crusade already has led to the formation of committees for pursuing the assigned tasks and to the dispatching of pioneers to some areas.

A Hand of the Cause Pioneers[edit]

From “down under” comes the news that Clara Dunn, Hand of the Cause, is adding luster to her long record of service to the Faith of Bahá’u’lláh by pioneering in Newcastle, a large port-city on the coast of New South Wales.

New Delhi Conference Plans[edit]

It is anticipated that thirty Australian and New Zealand believers will attend the Fourth Intercontinental Bahá’í Teaching Conference at New Delhi, India. Clara Dunn, Hand of the Cause, will be among them.

Bahá’í in Pix[edit]

PIX, Australia’s outstanding news picture magazine, carried a three-page article in its May 2 issue. Written by Stanley Bolton, a member of the Australia and New Zealand National Assembly, the article answered 19 questions frequently asked about the Faith. Illustrations included a 3-column, full-page portrait of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, a large picture of the Bahá’í House of Worship in Wilmette and pictures of groups of Bahá’ís of Australia and New Zealand.

Mr. Bolton quoted liberally from the writings of Shoghi Effendi, and, in answering the question “What contribution are the Bahá’ís making to world peace?”, directed attention to Bahá’u’lláh’s Tablets to the Kings. After speaking of Bahá’í participation in the activities of the United Nations and, previously, the League of Nations, he said:

“But long before the evolution of these international bodies Bahá’u’lláh, himself, while a prisoner, wrote to the rulers of Europe and Christendom — the Czar, the Shah, Napoleon III, Queen Victoria, the Kaiser, the Pope — urging them to meet in a world council and banish war from the face of the planet. The catastrophe of the West since the

writing of these tablets has been a tragic commentary on mankind and has invested these tablets with a prophetic and terrible interest.”

CANADA[edit]

Dr. Furútan Continues Canadian Tour[edit]

Dr. ‘Alí-Akbar Furútan, Hand of the Cause, with his interpreter, Mr. Anvar, has continued his visits to Canadian communities and assemblies.

In Winnipeg, a trip was made to a near-by Indian reservation.

In Toronto, Dr. Furútan addressed a capacity audience at a public meeting in the Hambourg House.

In Kingston, the “Whig-Standard” published a good picture and wrote an excellent interview.

Throughout the tour the many meetings with the friends have been a unique and thrilling experience. For most of the Canadian believers it was the first opportunity to meet a Bahá’í from the birthplace of the Faith and to hear at first hand of experiences in a land where there are communities of thousands of Bahá’ís and where a Bahá’í may still find a martyr’s death.

Dr. Furútan’s facility in answering all kinds of questions gave concrete meaning to the universality and the practicability of the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh.

CENTRAL AMERICA[edit]

Hand of Cause Visits Newly-formed Group[edit]

The new Bahá’í group of Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, recently formed through the extension teaching efforts of the San José Assembly, have reported their joy in the visit of Dhikru’lláh Khádem, Hand of the Cause, to their community during his recent trip through Central America. The Puerto Limon Group, whose numbers have been steadily growing since their formation in April, conduct regular study classes twice a week which are open to inquirers and interested contacts.

Crusade Activities in Central America[edit]

Immediately after receiving the Guardian’s Convention message to the Bahá’ís of Central America, the National Assembly named two new Teaching Committees, the American and the Asian, according to instructions contained in the cable. Since that time, the American Teaching Committee has been functioning continuously, sending out letters, questionnaires and information to fifty-two prospective pioneers for virgin and consolidation areas in Central America. Many of these are couples who are on pensions or who have means of their own, which greatly facilitates their placement in virgin areas where employment is hard to get.

Pioneers have already gone to Managua, Nicaragua; San José, Costa Rica; Paget and Hamilton, Bermuda.

The Western Hemisphere Teaching Committee of the United States is collaborating with the Teaching Committees of Central America.

National Election[edit]

Results of the balloting for the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Central America have been announced. The incoming members

[Page 4] are: Mrs. Cora H. Oliver, Mrs. Raquel de Constante, Mr. James V. Facey, Mrs. Elena Marsella Fernie, Mr. Harold Murray, Mr. Randolph Fitz-Henley, Mrs. Louise Caswell, Mrs. Marcia Stewart, Mr. Artemus Lamb.

NATIONAL NEWS[edit]

PERSIAN HANDS VISIT AMERICAN COMMUNITIES[edit]

Since the Second Intercontinental Conference the Persian Hands of the Cause have been engaged in widespread teaching activities. Responding to the Guardian’s cabled request that they disperse and visit the cities of the United States and the countries of Central and South America, Valíyu’lláh Varqá and Dhikru’lláh Khádem visited Bahá’í centers in Florida (page 5) on their way to South and Central America, ‘Alí-Akbar Furútan traveled through Canada, while in the United States Musá Banání toured the centers in California and Tarázu’lláh Samandarí and Shu’á’u’lláh ‘Aláí visited Assemblies from the Pacific Northwest to the Atlantic coast.

A partial list of the cities visited in the United States includes Boise, Idaho; Denver and Colorado Springs, Colorado; Kansas City, Missouri; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Peoria, Illinois; Nashville, Tennessee; Greensboro, North Carolina; Binghamton, Rochester and Buffalo, New York; Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Samandarí and General ‘Alá’í also visited the Junior Youth session at Louhelen Summer School.

In every place visited several meetings were held; some intimate gatherings of Bahá’ís where stories of the early days of the Faith brought the influence of those heroic times closer to the American believers; others, public meetings where the Hands of the Cause, speaking through an interpreter, dramatized the universal, world-wide response to the call of Bahá’u’lláh.

Radio and press interviews were frequent. In each of these the purpose of the trip was explained and some of the Bahá’í concepts expounded.

In speaking with the believers across the country, the Hands of the Cause have emphasized the responsibility of the American Bahá’ís in the execution of the Ten Year Crusade. This, they said, is because of the many bounties poured out on the American people, such as Bahá’u’lláh’s unusual mention of the Americas in the Aqdas, the laying of the cornerstone of the Mother Temple of the West by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá Himself, and the sending of Amatu’l-Bahá, Rúḥíyyih Khánum, by our beloved Guardian as his representative at the Intercontinental Teaching Conference in Chicago and the Dedication of the House of Worship in Wilmette.

Among the reasons offered by the Hands for the great success of the Persian Bahá’ís in teaching the Faith, in spite of the opposition to which they have always been subjected, were their diligent study of the Teachings and their uncompromising obedience to the spirit of the Bahá’í administrative order, and to the majority decision.

The way the assemblies, groups and isolated friends rose to the occasion in arranging for accommodations and meetings, in seeing that as many friends as possible might share the bounty of the visits of the Hands of the Cause, was a positive factor in the success of these teaching trips. Bahá’ís and close contacts travelled as much as 300 miles and more in order to avail themselves of the opportunity to meet these emissaries of the Guardian. In this way, many more communities than the centers visited were reached.

Universally, the reaction of the believers has been one of re-dedication to the Faith. Typical quotations from letters to the National

Spiritual Assembly express the gratitude of Bahá’ís across the United States in words such as these:

“We ... have been greatly blessed by their presence,” “... this weekend was a highlight in our Bahá’í experience,” “Bahá’í children were very much impressed, especially by Mr. Samandarí, because he had met Bahá’u’lláh.” “We wish to express our deep feeling of indebtedness to them and also to our beloved Guardian upon whose request they came.”

The presence of the Hands of the Cause at the ‎ Intercontinental‎ Conferences and their journeys throughout the world have awakened in the believers (as the visit of the Persian Hands throughout the Americas has done in a most vital way), a fuller measure of realization of the meaning of the words of the Guardian on the occasion of the appointment of the first contingent of the Hands of the Cause:

“Nascent institution forging fresh links binding rising World Center Faith to consolidating World Community followers Most Great Name ...” (Bahá’í News, Jan. 1952)

FAITH IN ACTION[edit]

The Declaration of the Báb was celebrated by the Bahá’ís of Miami, Miami Beach and North Dade County at a joint meeting which was addressed by two Hands of the Cause, Valíyu’lláh Varqá and Dhikru’lláh Khádem. Mrs. Khádem told the story of the Declaration. Then Dhikru’lláh Khádem spoke of the Faith of Bahá’u’lláh and of the Guardian.

On May 24, Mr. Varqá and Mr. Khádem spoke at the regular Sunday night meeting in Miami and at another gathering in Miami Beach.

On May 2, the same day as the dedication of the Mashriqu’l-Adhkár in Wilmette, a television presentation of the Faith, centered on the Temple, was produced over KGMB (TV), Honolulu, through the efforts of the Bahá’ís of Honolulu, Hawaii. Favorable reaction to this publicity has resulted.

The Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Los Angeles, California, have appointed a “Crusade Committee” to aid the pioneering effort and passed a motion that the function of the Los Angeles Bahá’í Community this Bahá’í year shall be primarily the encouragement of the dispersion of its members into national and international pioneering fields.

On Saturday, June 27 of this Jubilee Year, about 65 Bahá’ís and their friends gathered in the Peoria, Illinois, Bahá’í Center to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Peoria Bahá’í Community. Three of the ten believers enrolled in 1928 were present. Local newspapers carried the story of the celebration.

BAHA'I ON THE CAMPUS[edit]

After four years of consistent effort the Bahá’í Fellowship study and discussion group at the University of Chicago is gaining recognition. The 1953 issue of Cap and Gown has published a picture of the Bahá’í House of Worship at Wilmette with an article which said of the group:

“It stresses the necessity of an unfettered search after truth and finds in the stirring history and universal principles of the Bahá’í Faith a steadily-growing world-wide movement that seems to have, in the words of Oxford’s Dr. Jewett, “the promise of the future.”

NEWS SERVICE CONTINUES OPERATIONS[edit]

The Centenary News Service, now the Bahá’í News Service, is continuing full-scale operations, pressing the advantage gained through the nationwide publicity secured at the time of the Second Intercontinental Conference. The Press clipping book, beautifully compiling the releases which appeared at that time, is on its way to the Guardian.

WESTERN HEMISPHERE TEACHING NEWS[edit]

The four virgin goals in the Americas assigned to our NSA are being rapidly won. Mrs. Rose Perkal of New York City arrived on Kodiak Island off the coast of Alaska on July 8. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Crane of Orlando, Florida, arrived on Key West on July 20. Mr. and Mrs. Jenabe Caldwell and their three children left Great Falls, Montana, for the Aleutian Islands on July 18. Another pioneer is ready to leave for the Falkland Islands off the coast of Argentina as soon as his visa is cleared.

Our beloved Guardian’s messages have made it clear that America’s Spiritual Primacy is closely bound up with the assistance America must lend toward the winning of the virgin goals assigned to all the other NSAs. This raises our task in this hemisphere from four virgin goals to twenty-seven.

First Impressions of a Pioneer[edit]

Mrs. Rose Perkal has given us some glimpses of pioneering in a virgin goal, which we share with the friends through excerpts from her first letters:

[Page 7] Panoramic view of newly developed garden of the Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh at Bahjí.

“God is good to me and I am grateful for having the opportunity of being able to serve the Cause in such clean, progressive surroundings... At first one may be a little dismayed as I was when I first came in, but then as one looks around with the eyes of a Bahá’í, he sees a wonderful future for this lovely island ... When one begins to investigate, there are great possibilities for not only the person seeking to do business, but also for a wonderful Bahá’í Community ... There is beauty here. The ruggedness of Maine, hills, green foliage, high grass, islands ... The more I am amazed at the insight and knowledge the Guardian has in selecting these posts. Everything here is rugged, but already you can see the growth of a modern town — a new civilization.”

Remaining Hemisphere Goals[edit]

This committee is now devoting its primary effort toward helping to place American pioneers in the remaining virgin territories of this hemisphere. Those friends interested in these remaining spiritual prizes, please contact Mrs. Katherine McLaughlin, Secretary.

TEMPLE GUIDES COMMITTEE[edit]

31,844 people have visited the Bahá’í House of Worship at Wilmette since its public dedication on May 2. They have come from all parts of the world and all walks of life. The entire building is open every weekday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 10:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. During these times visitors are shown colored slides, accompanied by a recorded presentation of the Faith, and are conducted through the foundation area displays by guides who explain the exhibits and answer questions.

On Sunday, July 26, representatives of the National Spiritual Assembly and the Temple Reception Committee welcomed Mr. R. Mohammed Kafrawi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia to the Bahá’í House of Worship.

The House of Worship in Wilmette was visited on July 29 by Rousen Takashina, Archbishop of the Sõtõ sect of the Buddhists of Japan, with his secretaries. His Eminence Takashina represents 20,000 churches with congregations totalling 25,000,000 adherents.

It is thrilling to see the reaction of visitors to the beauty of the Temple and to the message of Bahá’u’lláh. The privilege of guiding is open to Bahá’ís. If you wish to be a guide, or to have a part in greeting visitors, communicate with:

BAHA'I NEWS SERVICE[edit]

Last year this committee sent a letter to all groups and isolated believers requesting, in the case of groups, that they appoint one member to be put on the Bahá’í News Service mailing list to receive all press releases and communications from the committee. This year, to save time and expense, they ask that a postal card be sent to the committee giving the name of the one appointed. Please state whether you represent a group or are an isolated believer.

If a group or isolated believer is already represented on the mailing list by the same person appointed last year, it will not be necessary to write the committee.

PROGRAM FOR THIRD INTER-CONTINENTAL BAHA’I CONFERENCE

As this issue of BAHÁ’Í NEWS goes to press, the Third Inter-Continental Bahá’í Conference is drawing to a close in Stockholm. The Fourth Inter-Continental Bahá’í Conference will be held at New Delhi, India, from October 7 to 15. Then these four great meetings which the Guardian has characterized as “constituting the highlights of the centenary celebrations commemorating this unique period in Bahá’í history” will be past.

The full import of these gatherings will be realized during the succeeding months of our dispersion to pioneer posts. Their inspiration will light our accelerated activities in all spheres of Bahá’í endeavor. Although the Ten Year Crusade will bring other moments of deep spiritual significance, these moments must be recorded in our hearts and in our deeds. The influence of our beloved Guardian through his appointed representatives, the presence of so many of the Hands of the Cause in our midst, the joys of association in the atmosphere of rededication to the Faith of Bahá’u’lláh are realities to all of the believers.

BAHÁ’Í NEWS presents the program of activities in Stockholm in order that we all may share, to the limits of our capacities, in the great events which took place this month in Sweden. The September issue of BAHÁ’Í NEWS will bring a full report of those events.
