MESSAGES FROM HANDS OF CAUSE[edit]

Enroute to the Pacific and Asia, October 28, 1970.

National Spiritual Assemblies of South America, Central America, North America, and the Islands of the Carribean --

Beloved Bahá’í Friends,

Before leaving the Western Hemisphere, it is my wish to try to express the love and gratitude flowing from my heart to all the believers who have welcomed, assisted and sustained me in these travels. For the past six months, in South, Central and North America, and the Antilles, rare experiences in the company of the soldiers of the Blessed Perfection have been granted me. Indeed, when I recall how the beloved Guardian expressed the hope to me that some day I would travel in the Western Hemisphere, to meet the friends and teach His Cause, it is now one more sign to me of the kindness of the Loving Creator to His servants that this experience should have come my way and these months be spent in a manner so pleasing to my soul.

For what can bring more happiness than seeing, from the tip of South America to the far reaches of Alaska, the triumphs of self-sacrificing soldiers in the army of the Blessed Beauty? The promises of the Master, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, are everywhere evidenced in their fruition, for now that the healing Word of God is being carried to the masses, they are entering our beloved Faith in troops and we are seeing the rapid expansion and simultaneous consolidation predicted for these days.

So many moments of joy and profound gratitude have been experienced during these months. It is impossible to cite them all, but to share the sweetness of one of them, I would mention the evening spent in Harlem in the company of Mr. John Birks Gillespie and a large group of Bahá’í friends. All my memories of visiting this beloved friend and brother, dear John Birks, are treasured, and it is my feeling and my prayer that with his deep devotion to the Cause and his many spiritual qualities, he will be of great service to humanity and hopefully to the work of the Faith in Africa.

And so it is with all the soldiers on fire with the love of God in this day.

With many, I shared the healing memory of an evening spent in the presence of the beloved Guardian, Shoghi Effendi, in different lands, when he said to us that Bahá’ís should be very happy, always; that we should never permit anything to disturb the tranquillity of our heart, or its peace and happiness, for we are really living in wonderful days.

The beloved Guardian said that Bahá’ís should be very happy indeed that they have been enabled by God Himself to recognize the greatness of this day, to accept the universal Manifestation of God and to wear His holy name. That is the first condition, the condition of happiness and gratitude to our Father that we have been permitted to recognize His Cause in this great day. [Page 2]And then the beloved Guardian reminded us that the Master taught that although there are very few states in the spiritual world, there are many spiritual conditions and degrees of perfection. Therefore, it is not enough to say that we believe in Bahá’u’lláh, but we must also accept this Supreme Manifestation and attempt to promote His Cause. Bahá’ís are spiritually higher than those who are not believers, for they have fulfilled the requirement made of man in the day of the coming of each Messenger of God, to recognize and accept that Messenger. He is the Manifestation of Truth, and the Revealer of the Will of God, of which the Lord Jesus Christ spoke when He encouraged us to pray that the Will of God “may be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

One evening the beloved Guardian was explaining to us that an African Bahá’í in a small African village who believes that Bahá’u’lláh is the Manifestation of God for this day, that He is the return of the spiritual reality of all the Manifestations, the Lord of the Vineyard -- that Bahá’í, unable to read or write, before God occupies a position higher than the honored prelates of Christendom.

And so the beloved Guardian made clear to us that many people believe the principles and find them beautiful, but they remain sympathizers, while a Bahá’í is the one who believes in the divine unity, and makes no distinction between the prophets of God, centering his energy in promoting the Faith of God for this day through the teachings of the Ancient Beauty, Bahá’u’lláh.

Therefore, dear friends, with this in our hearts, with the assurance of the beloved Guardian himself as to our high station, may we not review the Writings and the messages from the Universal House of Justice, to find what our share of heroic action in the army of the Blessed Beauty may be in this day? Inspired by the Writings of the Glory of God, Bahá’u’lláh and His Holiness the Exalted Báb, encouraged and supported by the example of the blessed Center of the Covenant, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, and our beloved Guardian, Shoghi Effendi, with the supreme, infallible body, the Universal House of Justice to channel our efforts to their fullest advantage, may we become soldiers armed with divine instruments. These instruments are love, devotion to the Faith, steadfastness, service, and complete attraction to the Abhá Kingdom. Wherever we go with these arms, we will conquer that city and that place.

O my beloved brothers and sisters, make effort in this manifest Day of God and win the favour, grace and pleasure of the Lord. “What result is forthcoming from material rest, tranquillity, luxury and attachment to this corporeal world,” asked the beloved Master, “it is evident that the man who pursues these things will in the end become afflicted with regret and loss.” We should close our eyes to these things, and “these thoughts, long for eternal life, the sublimity of the world of humanity, the celestial developments, the Holy Spirit, the promotion of the Word of God, the guidance of the inhabitants of the globe, the promulgation of universal peace and the proclamation of the oneness of the world of humanity. This is the WORK!

The Master used to say that the general does not love most the man in the back of the ranks -- He loves most the man in the front, leading the way.

I hope and pray that “with hearts overflowing with the love of God, with tongues commemorating the mention of God, with eyes turned to the Kingdom of God” you will, all of you, arise like never before and diffuse the divine fragrances, assured that “in whatever meeting ye enter, in the apex of that meeting the Holy Spirit shall be waving and the heavenly confirmations of the Blessed Perfection shall encompass” you.

With deepest loving Bahá’í greetings to each and every one of you, and assurance of my prayers for your unfailing guidance, protection and confirmation in the Cause of our Beloved.

(S) Enoch Olinga, Hand of the Cause of God [Page 3]National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the Hawaiian Islands- Beloved Friends:

Marguerite and I both think back with much happiness to the all too brief period of time we spent with you in those magical islands of spirit.

During our 6 months of travelling, whenever we reached one of the holy places of the Bahá’í Faith, we remembered your National Spiritual Assembly and its members in our prayers. We said special prayers for all of you at the Resting Place of our beloved Guardian in London, at all three of the sacred Shrines in the Holy Land during both of our visits there, at the House of the Báb in Shiraz, at the House of Bahá’u’lláh in Teheran, at Maku, Chiriq, Shaykh Tabarsi, and the other sacred places in the Cradle of our Faith.

As you know, the Blessed Báb wrote of Mulla Husayn saying that the very dust of the ground where he was buried was of such "potency" that it could "bring joy to the disconsolate and healing to the sick." And Bahá’u’lláh, writing of the sacredness of such dust, in the Íqán, speaks of the dust of the Imam Husayn, qualities that apply with such force and wonder to the dust of the grave of Mulla Husayn.

We brought back with us some of that holy dust, and I have sent to you under this same cover a small container of that sacred ground. Marguerite and I thought that it would bring a special blessing to your National Spiritual Assembly during the vital and exciting days still remaining during the Nine Year Plan --- and, who knows, perhaps bring such increased fervor and determination as to win all of the goals during the closing months of this current year. As the saying goes: "Let’s get it done in ’71!" Why not? We hold the destiny of the Cause of God in the palm of our hand, the beloved Guardian told us, and our Supreme Universal House of Justice has repeatedly made this clear to us as well. What a joy ‎ if‎ at this coming Ridvan it would be possible to send a cable to the World Center saying: "All Homefront goals fulfilled!" That would indeed be historic with two years yet to go. Then we could focus our flame-like intensity on the pioneering and oversea goals until a smashing victory would be won on every front.

May this sacred dust bless your meetings and bring to each one of you that "joy" that banishes all "disconsolate" thoughts, and may it bring "healing" to those who are ill, and sweeten the hours of your important and world-shaping consultations.

You are always in our thoughts and prayers. We remember you and your August Body each morning when we look out at the mountains and pray. We know that you, the "heroic generals" of the Nine Year Plan in those key islands will make of the months ahead a time of ‎ unprecedented‎ spirit and accomplishment.

With warmest, tenderest, grateful love to each one of you, in the service of the Universal House of Justice, on behalf of our beloved Guardian,

(S) William Sears, Hand of the Cause of God

P.S. I have enclosed the two quotations mentioned above from the Dawnbreakers and the Kitáb-i-Íqán.

MULLA HUSAYN[edit]

"In one of His visiting Tablets, the Báb asserts that the very dust of the ground where the remains of Mulla Husayn lie buried is endowed with such potency as to bring joy to the disconsolate and healing to the sick. In the Kitáb-i-Íqán, Bahá’u’lláh extolls with still greater force the virtues of Mulla Husayn. ’But for him,’ He writes, ’God would not have been established upon the seat of His mercy, nor have ascended the throne of eternal glory!’" "The circumstances attending (Mulla Husayn's) martyrdom evoked the Báb's inexpressible sorrow, a sorrow that found vent in eulogies and prayers of such great number as would be equivalent to thrice the volume of the Quran." (Dawnbreakers, p. 416, Kitáb-i-Íqán, p. 223)

Bahá’u’lláh has established for all time the power of the dust that enshrines such holy souls. In the Kitáb-i-Íqán, pp. 127-128, He writes of the dust sanctified by the blood of the Imam Husayn, saying: "What ascendency and influence hath the dust itself, through [Page 4]the sacredness and potency of that blood, exercised over the bodies and souls of men! So much so, that he who sought deliverance from his ills, was healed by touching the dust of that holy ground, and whosoever, wishing to protect his property, treasured with absolute faith and understanding a little of that holy earth within his house, safeguarded all his possessions. These are the outward manifestations of its potency. And were we to recount its hidden virtues they would assuredly say: 'He verily hath considered the dust to be the Lord of Lords, and hath utterly forsaken the Faith of God!"

NOTE: These quotations and the gilt container of precious dust have been placed in the National Archives.

National Spiritual Assembly of the Hawaiian Islands -

Dear Co-workers,

Your letter of Oct. 13th has just been received here in Brisbane yesterday.... we are on about the middle of a seven weeks visit to many Bahá’í Centres in Eastern Australia.

As much as I would like to visit Hawaiian Islands on the dates listed, this will not be possible as I shall be home three weeks and then leave for the Singapore Conference and visits both before and after, for many weeks, in Asia area Inshallah.

With loving greetings and best wishes for success in your planned Youth Conference and Winter School.

VENEZUELA[edit]

Hand of the Cause, Enoch Olinga arrived in Venezuela on August 28. A special reception was held for him that night in the ‎ Hazíratu’l-Quds‎. The next day the friends had an all day conference with him. That night he was flown to Maracaibo and spent the following two days in the Guajira. The first day in the Guajira was an all day meeting with Bahá’í teachers in Los Mochos, which some 34 Guajiro teachers attended.

That night he was flown back to Caracas and the following day was received by one of the Ministers of Government and Justice.

From Venezuela, Mr. Olinga travelled to Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, French Guiana and the United States. Upon his arrival in the United States Mr. Olinga cabled to the World Centre:

DEEPLY TOUCHED OVERWHELMING RECEPTION DEDICATION AND DEVOTION AMERICAN FRIENDS .... MASS CONVERSION DEEP SOUTH GAINING MOMENTUM ...”

BAHÁ’Í INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY[edit]

The program for the annual Conference of the Non - Governmental Organizations affiliated with the United Nations, Office of Public Information, held at United Nations Headquarters May 26 and 27, 1970, just received at the World Centre, contains a number of references to Bahá’í participation.

Mr. Victor de Araujo of the Bahá’í International Community acted as Chairman of the Planning Committee for the Conference.

Nine Bahá’ís represented the Bahá’í International Community and the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States at the Conference. At the Conference Mr. de Araujo was elected Vice-Chairman of the Non-Governmental Organizations Executive Committee office of Public Information for the year 1970-71.

ARGENTINA[edit]

Several friends from other countries including Gerald Bagley from Ecuador, Ouida Coley from Paraguay and John Caruana from Bolivia joined forces with seven volunteers in Argentina who arose at the Teaching Conference held in Rosario following the La Paz Continental Conference. The group worked in different teams daily and met continually to evaluate responses and methods used. There were more than 90 enrollments in Roque Saenz Pena the first afternoon and evening. In the course of the week some twenty new localities were opened.

INDIA[edit]

The cover of "Goa Today," an Indian magazine, recently featured a photograph of three Bahá’í youth. An article about the three young pioneers entitled "Three Beautiful Girls with a Message" includes in the opening paragraph the fact that all three of the girls are in Goa to pursue their studies, "as well as to spread the message of Bahá’u’lláh, the prophet founder of the Bahá’í Faith."

BOTSWANA[edit]

Some of the Bahá’í youth travelled on foot for long distances (cont. on p 6) [Page 6]to attend the first National Youth School in Botswana. Over thirty youth, adults and teachers attended the school. In each of the villages the friends had been invited by the Chief who had announced that the Bahá’ís were coming to bring the people the Message of Bahá’u’lláh. A speech especially prepared by the National Spiritual Assembly was delivered to the people by the youth and teachers from the school. Within a ten day period following the school a total of 683 people have heard of Bahá’u’lláh.

BRAZIL[edit]

Mass conversion began in Brazil "with the desire of the Continental Board of Counsellors to help Brazil win our goals." In the region of ‎ São Paulo‎ several nearby cities were opened to the Faith and about 40 persons accepted the Cause. The team went to Bahia where they remained for about one week. There they opened many localities, among them about 60 in the Indian community region, and enrolled about 120 new believers.

FRANCE[edit]

Hand of the Cause Ugo Giachery participated in the French Bahá’í Summer School which was held in Sevrier (Annecy), Haute-Savoie, from August 23 to 29. Over 100 friends were present from France, Corsica, Persia, United States, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, England, Denmark, Mali and some North African countries.

The following morning some of the friends saw me off at the airport and I was on my way to Truk and Ponape. Of course, the jet plane ride was very comfortable but after so much activity crammed into the last few days, -all thoughts were on the wonderful unity that manifested itself during and after the meeting. How can one express all that is felt both for the present as well as the potential of this island community and what feelings of the unknown that lay ahead of me in the next week?

With all the thoughts and silent prayers of thankfulness the time passed swiftly and suddenly the stewardess pointed out the Truk Islands. Trying to focus my camera as well as my mind on the little dots of green brought forth the oft-used phrase "they appear as emeralds in the ocean of blue." On approaching the landing field one gets a feeling in the pit of the stomach that it is too small an area for safe landing, but down we went without a problem. Debarking from the jet, I saw the seaplane to which we were to transfer. We had a half-hour wait before take-off so we waited in the terminal, a small, grass-thatched roof area. Looking over the area one sees both new modern homes being built on the mountainside as well as thatched homes. The trip to Ponape took two and a half hours by seaplane, which was to be replaced within two weeks by jet travel.

The steward, who was from Texas, pointed out that coffee and cookies were on the forward wall and soda was in the ice bucket on the floor. We settled down to a mode of transportation that was on its way out --- with a view of the sky above, the ocean below --- and the luggage strapped in front of us. Soon there loomed ahead of us the island of Ponape, with its coral landing strip on a small island off the coast, connected by a causeway a mile and a half long.

As we were going through immigration I met Sailas Henry and we arranged to meet later that evening. After stopping at the hotel I went over to the hospital and met Asher Palik who then took me to Rose Makwelung's home at which time we set up a meeting for Thursday evening at Rose's to get the friends together. That evening I met her son and daughter.

Rose sent a message up to the radio station calling all the friends to Thursday's meeting, and the message was broadcast. But the day had been stated as Friday instead of Thursday, so we decided to get together both nights. We discussed the area and Rose felt it would be excellent if we could get on the radio as well as use the film, "The New Wind."

On Thursday we walked the two miles up the coral road through town, jungle and school area to the radio station, I looking like the typical tourist with two cameras over my shoulder. I spoke with the manager, Mr. Elias Thomas, and he set a date for Friday morning to tape a show. We then went back to town and stopped at the newspaper to leave our write-up. The paper is mimeographed in both Ponapean and English and is published weekly. I met with Silas Henry later that afternoon at which time he invited me to accompany him on a trip the following day to the temple ruins -- a two hour boat ride, which I had to decline.

That evening Rose, Asher and myself gathered at Rose's home and I gave them the books ‎ I had‎ carried with me, as well as the Unity calendars and a couple of dictionaries, all of which they need and can use.

MISS MARSELLA SPEAKS[edit]

Keolumana United Methodist Church on the Windward side held a School for Concerned Churchmen during the months of September and October, and requested the ‎ Bahá’ís‎ to participate. Miss Elena Marsella was asked to present the Faith at their October 15 class. The attendance was small but tremendous interest was shown by those present, including the pastor, Rev. Jiro Mizuno. Several persons expressed a desire to read books on the Faith.

On October 28 Miss Marsella spoke to the Comparative Religion class at Leeward College. After the talk, she was asked many intelligent and interested questions.

Miss K. Wilder, the teacher, expressed that she was very impressed and has asked Miss Marsella to cap the entire course with another talk at the end of the session.

KAILUA TALK[edit]

On Tuesday, November 24, nearly 300 students heard an introductory talk on the Faith at Kailua High School.

Dr. Peter Tchou, director of Kailua High School's comparative religion series, introduced the three ‎ Bahá’í‎ speakers, Mike Burgess, Kurt Munchmeyer, and Duane Troxel.

Following a brief sketch on the Faith, the meeting was opened to questions. The hour allotted the speakers went quickly, so eager was the questioning. Dr. Tchou thanked the ‎ Bahá’ís‎ for coming and then amazed them by not dismissing the crowd, but requested they write down the basic ‎ Bahá’í‎ principles (continued) while he dictated them!

Immediately following dismissal, people thronged the speakers. One clergyman present requested a copy of the Hidden Words.
