MESSAGES FROM HANDS OF CAUSE

Enroute to the Pacific and Asia, October 28, 1970.

National Spiritual Assemblies of South America, Central America, North America, and the Islands of the Carribean --

Beloved Baha'i Friends,

Before leaving the Western Hem- isphere, it is my wish to try to express the love and gratitude flowing from my heart to all the believers who have welcomed, assis- ted and sustained me in these tra- vels. For the past six months, in South, Central and North America, and the Antilles, rare experiences in the company of the soldiers of the Blessed Perfection have been granted me. Indeed, when I recall how the beloved Guardian expressed the hope to me that some day I would travel in the Western Hemis- phere, to meet the friends and teach His Cause, it is now one more sign to me of the kindness of the Loving Creator to His servants that this experience should have come my way and these months be spent in a manner so pleasing to my soul.

For what can bring more happin- ess than seeing, from the tip of South America to the far reaches of Alaska, the triumphs of self-sacri- ficing soldiers in the army of the Blessed Beauty? The promises of the Master, 'Abdu'l-Baha, are ev- erywhere evidenced in their frui- tion, for now that the healing Word of God is being carried to the masses, they are entering our be- loved Faith in troops and we are seeing the rapid expansion and sim- ultaneous consolidation predicted for these days.

So many moments of joy and pro- found gratitude have been experi- enced during these months. It is» impossible to cite them all, but to share the sweetness of one of them, I would mention the evening spent

in Harlem in the company of Mr. John Birks Gillespie and a large group of Baha'i friends. All my

memories of visiting - this beloved friend and brother, dear John Birks, are treasured, and it is my feeling and my prayer that with his deep devotion to the Cause and his many spiritual qualities, he will be of great service to human- ity and hopefully to the work of the Faith in Africa.

And so it is with all the sold- iers on fire with the love of God in this day.

With many, in different lands, I shared the healing memory of an evening spent in the presence of the beloved Guardian, Shoghi Effen- di, when he said to us that Baha'is should be very happy, always; that we should never permit anything to disturb the tranquillity of our heart, or its peace and happiness, forwe are really living in wonder- ful days.

The beloved Guardian said that Baha'is should be very happy in- deed that they have been enabled by God Himself to recognize the greatness of this day, to accept the universal Manifestation of God and to wear His holy name. That is the first condition, the condition of happiness and gratitude to our Father that we have been permitted to recognize His Cause in this great day.

(cont. on p. 2) [Page 2]2 (cont. from p. 1)

And then the beloved Guardian reminded us that the Master taught that although there are very few states in the spiritual world, there are many spiritual conditions and degrees of perfection. There- fore, it is not enough to say that we believe in Baha'u'llah, but we must also accept this Supreme Man- ifestation and attempt to promote His Cause. Baha'is are spiritually higher than those who are not be- lievers, for they have fulfilled the requirement made of man in the day of the coming of each Messen- ger of God, to recognize and accept that Messenger. He is the Manifes- tation of Truth, and the Revealer of the Will of God, of which the Lord Jesus Christ spoke when He encouraged us to pray that the Will of God "may be done on earth as it is in heaven."

One evening the beloved Guardi- an was explaining to us' that an African Baha'i in a small African village who believes that Baha'u'-

llah is the Manifestation of God for this day, that He is the re- tur of the spiritual reality of all the Manifestations, the Lord

of the Vineyard -- that Baha'i, un able to read or write, before God occupies a position higher than the honored prelates of Christen- dom.

And so the beloved Guardian made clear to us that many people be- lieve the principles and find them beautiful, but they remain sympa- thizers, while a Baha'i is the one who believes in the divine unity, and makes no distinction between the prophets of God, centering his energy in promoting the Faith of God for this day through the teach- ings of the Ancient Beauty, Baha'u- "llah.

Therefore, dear friends, with this in our hearts, with the assu- rance of the beloved Guardian him- self as to our high station, may we not review the Writings and the messages from the Universal House of Justice, to find what our share of heroic action in the army of the Blessed Beauty may be in this day? Inspired by the Writings of the Glory of God, Baha'u'llah and His Holiness the Exalted Bab, en- couraged and supported by the ex- ample of the blessed Center of the Covenant, 'Abdu'l-Baha, and our be- loved Guardian, Shoghi Effendi,

with the supreme, infallible body, the Universal House of Justice to channel our efforts to their full- est advantage, may we become sold- iers armed with divine instruments. These instruments are love, devo- tion to the Faith, steadfastness, service, and complete attraction to the Abha Kingdom. Wherever we go with these arms, we will conquer that city and that place.

O my beloved brothers and sist- ers, make effort in this manifest Day of God and win the favour,

race and pleasure of the Lord. What result is forthcoming from material rest, tranquillity, lux- ury and attachment to this corpor- eal world," asked the beloved Mas- ter, "it is evident that the man who pursues these things will in the end become afflicted with re- gret and loss. We should close our eyes to these things, and "these thoughts, long for eternal life, the sublimity of the world of humanity, the celestial develop- ments, the Holy Spirit, the promo- tion of the Word of God, the guid- ance of the inhabitants of the globe, the promulgation of univer- sal peace and the proclamation of the oneness of the world of human- ity. This is the WORK:"

The Master used to say that the general does not love most the man in the back of the ranks -- He loves most the man in the front, leading the way.

I hope and pray that "with hearts overflowing with the love of God, with tongues commemorating the mention of God, with eyes turned to the Kingdom of God" you will, all of you, arise like never before and diffuse the divine fra- grances, assured that "in whatever meeting ye enter, in the apex of that meeting the Holy Spirit shall be waving and the heavenly confir- mations of the Blessed Perfection shall encompass" you.

With deepest loving Bahdi gree- tings to each and every one of you, and assurance of my prayers for your unfailing guidance, protec- tion and confirmation in the Cause of our Beloved.

(messages continued next column) [Page 3]National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the Hawaiian Islands-

Beloved Friends:

Marguerite and I both think back with much happiness’ to the all too brief period of time we spent with you in those magical islands of spirit.

During our 6 months of travel- ling, whenever we reached one of the holy places of the Baha'i Faith, we remembered your National Spiritual Assembly and its members in our prayers. We said special prayers for all of you at the Res- ting Place of our beloved Guardian in London, at all three of the sa- cred Shrines in the Holy Land dur- ing both of our visits there, at the House of the Bab in Shiraz, at the House of Baha'u'llah in Tehe- ran, at Maku, Chiriq, Shaykh Ta- barsi, and the other sacred places in the Cradle of our Faith.

As you know, the Blessed Bab wrote of Mulla Husayn saying that the very dust of the ground where he was buried was of such "potency"

that it could "bring joy to the disconsolate and healing to the sick." And Baha'u'llah, writing

of the sacredness of such dust, in the Iqan, speaks of the dust of the Imam Husayn, qualities that apply with such force and wonder to the dust of the grave of Mulla Husayn.

We brought back with us some of that holy dust, and I have sent to you under this same cover a small container of that sacred ground. Marguerite and I thought that it would bring a special blessing to your National Spiritual Assembly during the vital and exciting days still remaining during the Nine Year Plan --- and, who knows, per- haps bring such increased fervor and determination as to win all of the goals during the closing months of this current year. As the say-

ing goes: "Let's get it done in '71!" Why not? We hold the dest- iny of the Cause of God in the

palm of our hand, the beloved Guar- dian told us, and our Supreme Uni- versal House of Justice has repea- tedly made this clear to us as well. What a joy in at this com- ing Ridvan it would be possible to send a cable to the World Center saying: "All Homefront goals ful- filled!" That would indeed be his- toric with two years yet to go.

Then we could focus our flame-likeg intensity on the pioneering and

oversea goals untilasmashing vic-

tory would be won on every front.

May this sacred dust bless your meetings and bring to each one of you that "joy that banishes all ‘disconsolate thoughts, and may it bring "healing" to those who are ill, and sweeten the hours of your important and world-shaping consultations.

You are always in our thoughts and prayers. We remember you and your August Body each morning when we look out at the mountains and pray. We know that you, the "her- oic generals" of the Nine Year Plan in those key islands will make of the months ahead a time of unprecedentec spirit and accomp- lishment.

With warmest, tenderest, grate- ful love to each one of you, in the service of the Universal House of Justice, on behalf of our be- loved Guardian,

(S) William Sears, Cause of God

P.S. I have enclosed the two quo- tations mentioned above from the Dawnbreakers and the Kitab-i-Iqan.

Hand of the

MULLA HUSAYN

"In one of His visiting Tablets, the Bab asserts that the very dust of the ground where the remains of Mulla Husayn lie buried is endowed with such potency as to bring joy to the disconsolate and healing to the sick. In the Kitab-i-Iqan, Baha'u'llah extolls with still greater force the virtues of Mulla Husayn. 'But for him,' He writes, "God would not have been estab- lished upon the seat of His mercy, nor have ascended the throne of eternal glory!'" "The circumstan- ces attending (Mulla Husayn's) martyrdom evoked the Bab's inex- pressible sorrow, a sorrow that found vent in eulogies and prayers of such great number as would be equivalent to thrice the volume of the Quran." (Dawnbreakers, p. 416,

Kitab-i-Iqan, p. 223)

Baha'u'llah has established for all time the power of the dust that enshrines such holy souls. In the Kitab-i-Iqan, pp. 127-128, He writes of the dust sanctified by the blood of the Imam Husayn, say- ing: "What ascendency and influ- ence haththe dust itself, through

(cont. on p. 4) [Page 4]4 (cont. from p. 3)

the sacredness and potency of that blood, exercised over the bodies and souls of men! So much so, that he who sought deliverance from his ills, was healed by touching the dust of that holy ground, and who- soever, wishing to protect his pro- perty, treasured with absolute faith and understanding a little of that holy earth within his house, safeguarded all his posses- sions. These are the outward man- ifestations of its potency. And were we to recount its hidden vir- tues they would assuredly say: 'He verily hath considered the dust to be the Lord of Lords, and hath ut- terly forsaken the Faith of God!"

Meeting of Baha'is and contacts at Kolonia, Ponape, home of Mrs. Rose Makwelung (seated, with glasses.)

The following morning some of the friends saw me off at the air- port and I was on my way to Truk and Ponape. Of course, the jet plane ride was very comfortable but after so much activity crammed into the last few days, -all thoughts were on the wonderful un- ity that manifested itself during and after the meeting. How can one express all that is felt both for the present as well as the poten- tail of this island community and what feelings of the unknown that lay ahead of me in the next week?

With all the thoughts and silent

prayers of thankfulness the time passed swiftly and suddenly the stewardess pointed out the Truk

Islands. Trying to focus my camera as well as my mind on the Little dots of green brought forth the oft-used phrase "they appear as

emeralds in the ocean of blue.’ On approaching the landing field one gets a feeling in the pit of

the stomach that it is too small an area for safe landing, but down we went without a problem. Debar- king from the jet, I saw the sea- plane to which we were to transfer. We had a half-hour wait before take off so we waited in the terminal, a small, grass-thatched roof area. Looking over the area one sees both new modern homes being built on the mountainside as well as_ thatched homes. The trip to Ponape took two and a half hours by seaplane, which was to be replaced within two weeks by jet travel.

The steward, who was from Texas, pointed out that coffee and cook- ies were on the forward wall and soda was in the ice bucket on the floor. We settled down to a mode of transportation that was on its way out --- with a view of the sky above, the ocean below --- and the luggage strapped in front of us. Soon there loomed ahead of us the island of Ponape, with its coral landing strip ona _ small island off the coast, connected by a causeway a mile and a half long.

As we were going through immi- gration I met Sailas Henry and we arranged to meet later that even- ing. After stopping at the hotel I went over to the hospital and met Asher Palik who then’ took me to Rose Makwelung's home at which time we set up a meeting for Thurs- day evening at Rose's to get the friends together. That evening I met her son and daughter.

Rose sent a message up to the radio station calling all _ the friends to Thursday's meeting, and the message was broadcast. But the day had been stated as Friday in- stead of Thursday, so we decided to get together both nights. We discussed the area and Rose felt it would be excellent if we could get on the radio as well as use the film, The New Wind."

On Thursday we walked the two miles up the coral road through town, jungle and school area to the radio station, I looking like the typical tourist with two cameras over my shoulder. I spoke with the manager, Mr. Elias Thomas, and he set a date for Friday morning to tape a show. We then went back to town and stopped at the newspaper to leave our write-up. The paper is mimeographed in both Ponapean and English and is published week- ly. I met with Silas Henry later that afternoon at which time he invited me to accompany him on a trip the following day to the tem- ple ruins -- a two hour boat ride, which I had to decline.

That evening Rose, Asher and my- self gathered at Rose's home and I gave them the books [had carried with me, as well as the Unity cal- endars and a couple of dictionar- ies, all of which they need and

Keolumana United Methodist Church on the Windward side held a School for Concerned Churchmen du- ring the months of September and October, and requested the Baha'is

to participate. Miss Elena Mar- sella was asked to present the Faith at their October 15 class.

The attendance was small but tre- mendous interest was shown by those present, including the pastor, Rev. Jiro Mizuno. Several persons ex- pressed a desire to read books on the Faith.

On October 28 Miss Marsella spoke to the Comparative Religion class at Leeward College. After the talk, she was asked many in- telligent and interested questions.

Miss K. Wilder, the teacher, expressed that she was very impres- sed and has asked Miss Marsella to cap the entire course with another talk at the end of the session.

KAILUA TALK

On Tuesday, November 24, nearly 300 students heard an introductory talk on the Faith at Kailua High School.

Dr. Peter Tchou , director of Kailua High School's comparative religion series, introduced the three Baha'i speakers, Mike Burg- ess, Kurt Munchmeyer, and Duane Troxel.

Following a brief sketch on the Faith, the meeting was opened to questions. The hour allotted the speakers went quickly, so eager was the questioning. Dr. Tchou thanked the Baha'is for coming and then amazed them by not dismissing the crowd, but requested they write down the basic Baha'i principles
