God Instructeih Whomsoever Seeketh Him
The spirit that animateth the human heart is the knowledge of God, and its truest adorning is the recognition of the truth that ‘He doeth whatsoever He willethj and ordaineth that which He pleaseth.’ Its raiment is the fear of God, and its perfection steadfastness in His Faith. Thus God irzstructeth whomsoever seeketh Him. He, verily, loveth the one that turneth towards Him.
— Gleanings, p. 291
He hath chosen out of the whole world the hearts of His servants, and made them each a seat for the revelation of His glory. Wherefore, sanctify them from every defilement, that the things for which they were created may be graven upon them.
——Gleanings, p. 297
In these troubled times many people are seeking answers to their problems and confusion by turning to various forms of spiritualism and psychic phenomena. Among them are Bahá’ís not informed on the Teachings of Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá on the soul and its relation to the Unseen World. “To tamper with psychic forces while in this world,” says ‘Abdu»’l-Baha, “interferes with the condition of the soul in the world to come” where “these forces are real, but, normally, are not active on this plane.”
Since the study of astrology has become popular among persons seeking guidance in many aspects of their daily lives, the National Spiritual Assembly shares with the friends references to this subject by the Guardian in letters written to individuals on his behalf which have been made available to the National Spiritual Assembly by The Universal House of Justice.
“. . .It is absolutely essential that the teachings should not be confused with the obscure ideas related to numerology and astrology and the like. Individuals interested in them are free to believe in and credit such ideas, and to make any inferences and deductions they desire from them, but under no circumstances are they expected to identify them with the principles and teachings of the Cause. We must at this stage preserve the purity and sancitity of the Bahá’í teachings. I will pray that you may be guided in your efforts, and may succeed in safeguarding and promoting the interests of our beloved Faith.” (December 26, 1928)
“Concerning your question as to the influence of the stars and planets on the life of a believer; such ideas should be entirely dissociated from the Teachings. The
passage on p. 133 of the ‘Gleanings’ bears no reference whatsoever to this matter.
“As to illness or poverty; such calamities may be either irrevocable or, and it is often the case,_they may be avoided. There is no reference in the Teachings as to whether the stars have any influence on healing such diseases. These astrological ideas are for the most part sheer superstitions.” (July 17, 1937)
“The Guardian considers ‘astrology’ which is a pseudoscience, as for the most part ‘non sensical‘, as it is mostly made up of superstitious beliefs and practices.” (July 10, 1939)
“Astronomy is a science, astrology does not come under the same category, but we should be patient with people who believe in it, and gradually wean them away from reliance on such things.” (December 24, ’1941)
“We should attach no importance to astrology or horoscopes. No exact science is involved, though sometimes some truth seems involved, but the percentage is small.” (January 15, 1951)
“The friends should be encouraged not to waste time on such things as astrology, etc . . . They cannot be forbidden to do so. The exercise of our free will to choose to do the right thing is much more important.” (July 30, 1956)
Building Bridges
Now that the Faith of Bahá’u’lláh is emerging from obscurity f thanks to the intensified proclamation campaigns being mounted everywhere, it is vital that a great effort be made on the part of local Bahá’í institutions, as well as individuals, to build bridges between the Bahá’í Community and the community at large. As knowledge of the Faith increases in the minds of government and civic leaders, educators, artists, and the like, the prestige of the Bahá’í Community is bound to rise. We cannot overemphasize the necessity at this time for each Local Spiritual Assembly and each influential Bahá’í to work assiduously toward the objective of making known to local officials and leaders the nature, purposes, and attitudes of the Faith concerning such subjects as the oneness of mankind, loyalty to government, and non—participation of Bahá’ís in partisan politics—in addition, of course, to acquainting them with the ecstatic beauty and spiritual power of the utterances of Bahá’u’lláh.

REVIEW
Messages to the State Conventions of 1970
At this time in the Bahá’í World, great changes are taking place. Renewed energy and vigor is surging through the “Community of the Greatest Name” and the Supreme Concourse is assisting all who rise to proclaim the name of Bahá’u’lláh.
This is why the State Conventions received letters of guidance and explanation from Hand of the Cause of God Mr. William Sears, and from the Continental Board of Counsellors. These beautiful messages should be read carefully because they represent messages from Institutions set up by the pen of Bahá’u’lláh and the Universal House of Justice. They are being reprinted in their en Page 3
tirety here.
TO: THE HEROES AND HEROINES ASSEMBLED AT THE STATE CONVENTIONS Beloved Colleagues and Co-workers:
These are just a few words of loving appreciation to all of the friends in America for the sacrifice, devotion and persistence they have shown during the past year in bringing new believers into the ranks of the “radiant Army of Bahá’u’lláh". When Marguerite and I heard the exciting news that the United States was determined to win every Homefront goal by Rjgvén 1971, we were immensely proud of the courage and audacity of your National Spiritual Assembly and all the friends who were arising to support them. Never before, in the history of any of the great plans of our Faith, has the cradle of the Administrative Order finished its weighty Homefront goals two complete years before the end of the Plan. Such a victory might well mark the beginning of that era foreseen by the beloved Master and our Guardian
“What an untold wealth of blessings will fiow out of a renewed, an irrevocable resolution, representing the combined will of all the steadfast lovers of the Cause of God in that land,” Shoghi Effendi assured us. “Their will to succeed,” he added, “must eventually‘ triumph.”(pp_ 12, Messages to America)
Why not now‘? Why.not this year? In the words of the Continental Board of Counsellors for North America, who have written such a moving message to you all, “Let’s Get It Done In ’71."’
The leadership, the audacity, the consecration of your National Spiritual Assembly to this unique and thrilling objective, has inspired all the Institutions of the Faith to rally to their support. May this be the year that every local spiritual assembly, group and isolated believer, as well as the friends in every local community. keep the words of our beloved Guardian constantly before them: “. the most essential, the most urgent of all our obligations (is) namely to bury our cares and teach the Cause, delivering far and wide this Message of Salvation to a sorely stricken humanity.” (Bahá’í Administration, p. 42)
Our supreme Universal House of Justice has repeatedly reminded us of Americas great, global destiny. This “shining” destiny now hangs in the balance. A total victory on the Homefront, two years ahead of schedule, might well be the key that opens the door to the promised day when the peoples of the world will “enter the Faith in
troops”. This is the stunning victory that lies almost within our grasp. How can we accomplish it?
“The American believers," Shoghi Effendi told us, “if they wish to carry out, in the spirit and letter, the parting wish of their beloved Master, must intensify their teaching work a thousandfold.” (Messages to America, p. 7)
He has also told us what the result of such a combined effort on our part would be, assuring America that “the prizes destined for the valiant conquerors are inestimably precious and the sustaining Grace of the Lord of Hosts promised to the executors of His mandate is “indescribably potent.” (Messages to America, p. 109)
These potent “blessings” we are told will intensify with our own increased effort; they will rain down upon us continually if we unite and persevere, “until the seal of unqualified victory is set upon their epoch making task.” (Messages to America, p. 66)
And these two final promises: The American Bahá’í community, our Writings tell us, has been “preserved through the inscrutable dispensations of Divine Providence for a destiny which no mind can as yet conceive."
“To its delegates is given a great opportunity to release forces which will usher in an era whose splendor must outshine the heroic age of our beloved Cause. (The) Supreme Concourse (is) waiting for them to seize it.” (Messages to America, p. 3)
Is it these delegates you have assembled to elect today‘? Is this the beginning of our days of destiny’? Only those of us here in this room can give the answer.
With warmest and tenderest love, in the service of the Universal House of Justice on behalf of the beloved Guardian.
William" Sears Hand of the Cause of God
TO THE STATE CONVENTIONS OF THE UNITED STATES Beloved Friends:
On this important day when we come together to elect the delegates for our National Convention we have, also, the priceless opportunity of consulting together to see more clearly our personal role in God’s Plan. ,
In their message of November 16th 1969 the Universal
[Page 4]Page 4
House of Justice spoke of the “. . . opportunities which we must seize before it is too late.” “. . . Every Bahá’í, however humble or inarticulate, must become intent on fulfilling his role as a bearer of the Divine Message. . . .”' “. . . It is now imperative for every Bahá’í to set for himself individual teaching goals. The admonition of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá to lead at least one new soul to the Faith each year and the exhortation of Shoghi Effendi to hold a Bahá’í fireside in one’s home every Bahá’í month are examples of individual goals. Many have capacity to do even more but this alone will assure final and complete victory of the Plan.”
Our beloved Guardian told us that the Supreme Con course was suspended between heaven and earth searching for souls, for willing instruments through which it could work miracles of God in this day. And who, we may ask, are these exalted Bahá’ís who are worthy to be chosen as the instruments of the Supreme Concourse’? The beloved Guardian provided the answer September 21st 1957 in a letter addressed to American Bahá’ís just a few months before his ascension: “A ‘best teacher’ and an ‘exemplary believer’ is ultimately neither more nor less than an ordinary Bahá’í who has consecrated himself to the work of the Faith, deepened his knowledge and understandings of its Teachings, placed his confidence in Bahá’u’lláh, and arisen to serve Him to the best of his ability. This door is one which we are assured will open before the face of every follower of the Faith who knocks hard enough, so to speak. When the will and the desire are strong enough, the means will be found and the way opened either to do more work locally. to go to a new goal town . . . or to enter the foreign pioneer field.”
Bahá’u’lláh also gave us the uncomplicated formula by which we are assured of success: “And when he determineth to leave his home, for the sake of the Cause of his Lord, let him put his whole trust in God, as the best provision for his journey, and array himself with the robe of virtue. . . . If he be kindled with the fire of His love, if he forgoeth all created things, the words he uttereth shall set on fire them that hear him.” (Advent of Divine ]u.s‘lice, p. 42)
Have you been hearing the thrilling stories of what is being accomplished on our continent when ordinary, sometimes frightened Bahá’ís, place themselves in the hands of God‘? From the Deep South of United States~Bogalusa, Louisiana, reported twenty-seven declarations within a period of two hours; Dawson, Georgia, reported sixty new believers within a few days. Over 500 new believers enrolled during a two months period in the Deep South, an area previously considered to be the most difficult in the United States. From Auxiliary Board member Paul Pettit comes a report of 110 new Bahá’ís in East
JANUARY 1971
Texas in one month, with nineteen new centers opened, four of which have nine or more adult Bahá’ís to assure local spiritual assemblies by Ridva n.
And it is happening in Canada too! During July the friends attending an Ontario Summer Conference dedicated themselves to Bahá’u’lláh through deepening studies and prayer and made a spiritual assault on Paris, Ontario, where there were no resident Bahá’ís. About twentyfour non-Bahá’ís came to an ‘open house‘; there were twelve declarations including eight from Paris. A recent report indicates there are at least nineteen believers in Paris. In Lakefield, Ontario where the community has struggled valiantly each year to maintain its local Assembly, that village is now the center of an area which has recently caught fire with the enrollment of over forty youth. Similar achievements have been reported from other parts of Canada including the Atlantic Provinces and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.
From Alaska comes the thrilling news regarding teachers who are newly arising to unlock the hearts and souls of the inhabitants of that vast country. As a result of a recent teacher—training institute, nineteen Bahá’í's have developed individual travel—teaching plans, involving seventyfive villages, some of which are very isolated. Among these champions of the Faith are those of native background—Eskimo and lndian—who have been assured by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá that “They will become so enlightened as in turn to shed light to all regions.” Alaska, too, is on the march
Beloved friends, we can experience such teaching success in every part of this wonderful country. If we but follow the leadership of the National Spiritual Assembly we will, this year, scale the heights. As a byproduct we will be the happiest people in the world. We will achieve this through our love for each other as we are welded together in common purpose. In a message of September 1964 our Universal House of Justice said to us “The real secret of universal participation lies in the Master‘s oft expressed wish that the friends should love each other, constantly encourage each other, work together, be as one soul in one body, and in so doing become a true, organic, healthy body animated and illumined by the spirit. In such a body all will receive spiritual health and vitality from the organism itself, and the most perfect flowers and fruits will be brought forth.”
The Continental Counsellors send their deepest love to the Bahá’í Community of the United States.
Lovingly submitted, Lloyd Gardner Florence V. Mayberry Edna True

REVIEW
A PIONEER WRITES. . .
The following is from an American pioneer to Ghana who, with her husband and daughter arrived there in the Fall of 1970.
Under A Starry Sky
Beautiful faces! Twinkling stars! The babble of the very young! A kerosene lantern and two flashlights! That was it, but there was Bahá’u’lláh, there was a spirit of oneness. The Feast of ‘Ilm was about to begin.
Incredible! Wilmette, The House of Worship, so far away and here I am in Ghana, Western Africa, a pioneer with my husband, Irvin, and our daughter, Eileen. In terms of time, was it really so long ago when we heard the call for pioneers in the blessed halls of the “Temple”? It was hard to really understand then what they meant when they talked of the reward of shining, radiant faces For us, this became a reality at the Feast of ‘llm in the Village of Ofankor about one half hour from Accra, capital of Ghana.
A group of Accra Bahá’ís boarded a “Mammy—Wagon” —‘destination, Ofankor. As we crowded in, we knew that we had exceeded the bus’ capacity so Sam Lynch and Joseph Hammond, Jr. cheerfully waved “good bye” as they started offon Sam’s well-known motorbike.
What spirit! What camaraderie pervaded the group! We were off to do Bahá’u’lláh’s bidding. What better way to spend the time as the “Mammy-Wagon” swayed and lurched than to sing! And sing we did! There was that one tense moment, to be repeated on the return trip, when the police stopped us because of the load. We simply held the children more tightly and sang louder. We knew Bahá’u’lláh wanted us to get there. Finally, a scowling policeman waved us on.
And then we were there, directed into the village by a distinguished gentleman who closely resembled “Uncle Fred Murray” the Australian aborigine whom we met at the Jubilee in London in 1963. Mr. Michael S.S. Ntreh, a village elder, the first Bahá’í' in Ofankor to whom Sam and Golgasht Mossafai had introduced the Faith last year was beautiful to look at, white hair, white beard and so regal in his colorful “toga—like” dress.
Through lack of communication, a problem that you either learn to live with or you perish, the Ofankor Bahá’ís waited for us from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. and then returned toptheir huts. Soon, the Bahá’ís were rounded up, benches placed to form a rectangle and straw mats placed on the ground inside the rectangle for the many children, and through an interpreter, the babble of voices was stilled.
The only light was the one kerosene lantern, but with the help of two flashlights we read prayers, some in English, some in Ga, the dialect of the village. Ebony faces, flashing white teeth, smiles, joy, a union with God
Page 5
through Bahá’u’lláh, some white faces, peace, fellowship, no separation, just love, there, because the Promised One ‘had come. There were no barriers for the Blessed Beauty was truly in our midst.
Finally Sam was talking, bringing our message of love with Mr. Ntreh interpreting. There was a moment of laughter when Sam said, “Tell them that Bahá’ís all over the world love each other,” to which Mr. Ntreh replied, “I have just told them that.” How much more he improvised we will never know until we learn GA!
Little hands reached up for the bananas and cookies we had brought from Accra, and soon all were demolished.
We taught the children another song, and the quietude of the night was broken only by voices lifted high and carried by the gentle breeze. How does one describe such fortune, such rewards, such magnificence‘?
Like Bahá’ís everywhere, we stood around saying “good bye” and as we boarded the “Mammy—Wagon," children and adults pressed against the windows calling “ ‘Allah’u’Abhá.”
Would we ever make it over that broken terrain? The “Mammy—Wagon” lurched forward and then rested as if'to catch its second wind, and as we lurched and stopped; our voices, as one, were raised in .song, “‘Allah’u’Abhá." We were out of the village and on the main road when we were confronted with another police check up — too many people. And now it was time for the song “Is There Any Remover of Difficulties” for two policemen looked very upset. Of course, our prayer would be effective, and effective it was. The rest of the trip was truly a “song festival.”
The blessings were ours, the rewards were ours. We had found our brothers in their village of mud huts and thatched roofs. There was an inner peace, a desire to retain that inner peace, to continue to push on in His Name— all that is left in a disintegrating world.
—Harriet S. Lourie
