NATIONAL BAHÁ’Í REVIEW[edit]
Thank God That I am a Bahá’í[edit]
When I arise from my bed in the morning, I think "Ya-Bahá’u’l-Abhá! Thank God that I am a Bahá’í."
As my day and week progress, I go to a committee meeting, say my obligatory prayers, give to the Fund (modestly), attend a Feast, serve on a Local Spiritual Assembly, go to a fireside, all the time thanking God that I am a Bahá’í. This is nice, this is comfortable, it's not too demanding most of the time...
Then, a friend calls: "Will you attend a special meeting this week?" I think: no, I can't—I've been out twice this week—my family will not approve. Please find someone else to go. And then I think of Shoghi Effendi who seldom spent a private moment with his wife or family. Could I have been a Bahá’í today if this was not so? Yes, I'll go to the meeting, I can do so little, let me do what I can. I thank God that I am a Bahá’í.
There is a project coming up in the community that needs people to make it work. But I can't—I'm too old to be this active, I must have my rest. And then I think of Mr. Samandari, 93 years of age, and he had no home. He had to bind his legs so that he could stand. He never for one moment stopped to rest until he passed into the Abhá Kingdom. He was not too old
Award Winning Float[edit]
The Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Kent, Washington, in cooperation with four adjoining Assemblies and three neighboring groups, constructed a float which was entered in the Kent "Meeker Days" parade in July. The photograph shows the float approaching the reviewing stand with Bob Stevens of KCCD with Bahá’í children, representing various ethnic backgrounds. Around 4,000 persons viewed the parade. The float won first prize.
Again the float was entered in the Des Moines "Waterland Festival" parade of August. The theme was "Happiness is World Unity". An estimated 7,000 to 8,000 persons viewed the float and response was favorable.

to serve. Yes, I'll work on that project. I thank God that I am a Bahá’í.
Our community needs teachers for the Bahá’í children's school. Will I help out for an hour on Sunday mornings? No, I can not. I work all week. On Saturdays I clean house. Sunday is my only day for relaxation. And then I think of the pioneers who give up their homes to go to strange lands to teach. They give up their jobs, and fortified with the love of Bahá’u’lláh, they give years of their lives to teach. Yes, I can teach one hour on Sunday mornings. The only house I really need to clean is that of my heart. I thank God that I am a Bahá’í.
Local Spiritual Assembly meeting tonight—I can't go. The weather is terrible. Surely Bahá’u’lláh understands. And then I think of His banishment; four months in the most terrible cold weather, snow, members of His family suffering from exposure; surely, I can drive my car through rain for twenty minutes. Yes, I'll go, for Bahá’u’lláh knows my heart. I thank God that I am a Bahá’í.
I can not be so active—with my job and my family, the strain is telling on me. Bahá’u’lláh would not want me to ruin my health. And then I think, this is my health. Before I was dead—now I am alive. If I give less of myself than I am able to give, my health will suffer. If I give more, my health will flourish. And if my body expends itself in the service of Bahá’u’lláh, then surely I will enter the Abhá Kingdom. I thank God that I am a Bahá’í!
OCTOBER 1971[edit]
Will I take a weekend teaching trip? No—I can not leave my children. They need me. And then I think: when the suffering of the great catastrophe hits my family, and my children say to me: "What did you do to prevent this?" I must be able to say: "Yes, children, I did work for the New World Order. This is the gift of my love for you—more important than my physical presence at all times." I thank God that I am a Bahá’í.
I thank God that there were those who did not worry about family, jobs, health, wealth and had the most great detachment, for we would not be Bahá’ís today were it not for the 20,000 martyrs. And then I think of the words of Shoghi Effendi in The Advent of Divine Justice page 6: "The community of the organized promoters of the Faith of Bahá’u’lláh in the American continent—the spiritual descendants of the Dawn-Breakers of an heroic age, who by their death proclaimed the birth of that Faith—must in turn, usher in, not by their death but through living sacrifice, that promised World Order, the shell ordained to enshrine that priceless jewel, the world civilization of which the Faith itself is the sole begetter." I thank God that I am a Bahá’í!

REVIEW: North Central States Bahá’í School[edit]
Summer Session, 1971
The train bearing Beloved Hand of the Cause Zikr’u’lláh Khádem, Auxiliary Board member Javidukht Khádem, and their family departed from the railroad station at Red Wing, Minnesota, bringing to a close a particularly blessed and most joyous summer session.
The Seventh Annual North Central States Bahá’í Summer School was held on scenic Lake Pepin at Frontenac Methodist Camp, Frontenac, Minnesota, during the last week of August. Three-hundred and thirteen friends attended the school. Forty-four declared their belief in Bahá’u’lláh and registered as Bahá’ís.
The children enjoyed a most diversified program including arts, crafts, and classes on the Faith. Each of the adult teachers visited the children during their class and spoke with them. In addition, the Junior Youth had special classes entitled, "Character", "Covenant and Administration" and "The Universal House of Justice". Evening entertainment for the children consisted of slides and a film.
The impact of the vast store of knowledge shared by the teachers with the adult classes was immeasurable. Truly there seemed to be a glimpse of the "embryo of a Bahá’í University." The courses taught were "Epistle to the Son of the Wolf", "Covenant and Administration", "Life of Bahá’u’lláh" and "Mass Teaching". So hungry for knowledge were the friends that Mr. Khádem held question and answer sessions in the afternoons.
One marvelous afternoon was spent with a surprising but most welcome visit from Mr. Ted Anderson, Auxiliary Board member and his wife, Joanie, who shared with the friends exciting stories of pioneering and mass teaching in the Yukon.
For the first time music was in wonderful profusion. Two road shows, organized to help with mass teaching in the North Central States, performed many times and once during one of Poova Murday's evening sessions on Mass Teaching. Children as well as adults had composed music and sometimes both words and music. So much talent was discovered that time could not be found to give the friends the opportunity to enjoy all of it.
Interest in Adib Taherzadeh’s late night session ran so high that by request of the students on his last evening at the school the curfew was extended an hour-and-a-half.
With us for but a short time were former Auxiliary Board members—Beth McKenty and Poova Murday. But, Praise be to God! with us for the entire session were Hand of the Cause of God Zikr’u’lláh Khádem, Auxiliary Board member Javidukht Khádem, and wonderful Bahá’í scholar and British National Spiritual Assembly member Adib Taherzadeh.

World Peace Day, Bozeman, Montana[edit]
By George Galinkin
World Peace Day was a wonderful way for us to start our pioneer activities in Bozeman, Montana. We, the Galinkin family of six, arrived here on August 27th. George had been here for five weeks during the summer as he had to start his new job as Assistant Professor of Social Work at Montana State University in June. This gave him an opportunity to get to know the area a little bit before bringing over the family from Tacoma, Washington.
The following is a run down on what we did in preparation for World Peace Day: presented literature to the Chamber of Commerce; met with the Mayor and City Commission on Sept. 8th where the Mayor signed a World Peace Day proclamation and we presented him with the book, The Proclamation of Bahá’u’lláh; this was reported the next day in the local newspaper in a brief sentence about city commission business; sent World Peace Day spot announcements to the three local radio stations and all were used also announcing the Mayor's Proclamation; news release and ad appeared in the Gallatin County and Belgrade Journal (weekly) on Sept. 16; World Peace Day ad in the Bozeman Daily chronical on Sept. 17; news release appeared in the Sunday Bozeman Daily chronical (18 inches); the public meeting held at the Galinkin home attracted eight non-Bahá’ís and three Bahá’ís. Several asked that regular firesides be held so they could learn more about the Faith.
The publicity aroused much interest among University faculty and several offered to speak at firesides on various subjects related to the Bahá’í teachings.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RINGSTONE SYMBOL[edit]
If your friends wish to know the meaning of the symbol, you may wish to explain that the three levels represent: the world of God, the Creator the world of His Manifestations the world of man s.
The vertical line (joins هه J , and joins the three horizontal bars together, in the same way as that the Divine Messengers of God form the link between the world of God and the world of man.
The twin five-pointed stars on either side of the design represent the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh, the twin Messengers of God for this age.
A more detailed explanation of the design has been given by Hand of the Cause of God Abu’l-Qásim Faizí, on pages 8 to 10 of American Bahá’í News, issue of October 1968.
Briefly, Mr. Faizí says the symbol explains graphically that followers of all religions believe that man, left to himself, can never recognize God and attain His presence. Nor is man able to fathom the mystery and purpose of his own creation. God, in His illimitable bounty, singles out His Manifestations, sending Them to man at different times and places in order to grant penetrating insight to man and to enable him to have a glimpse of the unfading glories of the innumerable worlds beyond.

EUROPE'S AWAKENING NECESSITATES PIONEER SETTLEMENT AND DEPUTIZATION[edit]
Often when we think of pioneers who need deputization, the first thought is of those in remote and primitive areas where work is not available and the opportunity exists for full-time Bahá’í teaching work. In addition, however, there are pioneers in more technically developed countries, as on the European continent, who are filling homefront goals of the Nine Year Plan in their pioneer country. These goals are often in the smaller cities and towns where employment is possible but often takes longer to obtain than in large metropolitan areas and living costs are high. Many pioneers use up their savings to support themselves until employment can be obtained or the International Goals Committee, in some instances, assists these pioneers for a short term until they can establish themselves and find work.
This past spring and summer exciting events have taken place in Europe with the beginning of large scale enrollments. This momentum must be maintained! Pioneers must arrive and remain at their posts! Often a few months of deputization means the difference between a pioneer establishing himself in a goal and one who, with great sorrow, is forced to leave his post for lack of material sustenance.
If you, as an individual, group, Assembly, wish to contribute to the winning of the goals of the Nine Year Plan by assisting a United States pioneer, earmark a contribution to the National Bahá’í Fund: "U.S. Deputization Fund for Europe".
How to Teach the Faith[edit]
From the Trinidad and Tobago Bulletin, we learn their technique for teaching the Faith, given below. You will note that it is tied in with the use of a short series of drawings or pictures which give the teacher a reminder of what he wants to say. Certainly it is not a set speech, because any attempt to memorize a speech would appear unnatural and would arouse suspicion rather than confidence. Using the pictures as memory hints would at the same time hold the attention of the listener while the Faith is being explained. Note the simplicity of speech, at the same time it is presented with accuracy and leaves space for questions and further investigation. Each individual will doubtless develop his own teaching techniques, but undoubtedly the most effective methods attempt to tune in to the needs and interests of the hearer.
Possibly this explanation will give confidence to someone who has not yet ventured out to mass teach. In the Bahá’í Faith there are no priests who have the special job of teaching, and Bahá’u’lláh tells us that all Bahá’ís should teach others about this new Message from God. The Universal House of Justice at the World Center of the Bahá’í Faith in Haifa, Israel, has told us that there are five fundamentals which we should tell about the Bahá’í Faith. These fundamentals are: Bahá’u’lláh, the Báb, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, the Bahá’í laws and the Bahá’í institutions. The drawings that are at the Center help us to remember these five things, and they help us to remember what to say.
First, we go along where we want to teach, and look for a friendly person who is not busy. Do not call into a house or stop someone from working. When you see someone, say:
"We are Bahá’ís, members of the Bahá’í Faith. The Bahá’í Faith is a new Message from God that teaches us about peace and unity for the whole world. Would you like to hear about it? Do you have time now?"
If they say yes, show them your drawings and explain them. Do not go into the house unless you are invited. One drawing shows people together in unity. You could say:
"God made all the people of the world, and He wants us to live together in unity like the people in the drawing. But there is no unity in the world. Everyone is searching for unity, but there are more wars and more suffering. God has sent a wonderful new Divine Teacher to the world to show us how to live together in love and unity."
Show the next drawing of Bahá’u’lláh’s Name. Say:
"This new Teacher is Bahá’u’lláh. Bahá’u’lláh means the Glory of God. Can you say 'Bahá’u’lláh?' Bahá’u’lláh is the wonderful new Divine Teacher that God has sent to the world to establish peace and unity. He comes to teach us how to live together in oneness."
Show the next drawing of the Most Great Prison in Akka, Israel. Say:
"Bahá’u’lláh suffered terribly to give the world this beautiful Message. They put Him in a deep dungeon underground and put very heavy chains around His neck. It was a filthy place with a terrible smell. They thought He would die there, but He didn't. Finally His enemies sent Him far away from His home in Persia to this terrible prison in Akka, Israel, the Holy Land. He stayed there with many of the first believers until He died. He is buried there in a beautiful shrine, and Bahá’ís from all over the world go to the Holy Land to visit the shrine of Bahá’u’lláh."
Next, show the drawing of the gate. Say:
"A young man called the Báb came before Bahá’u’lláh and told the people that this is the age of unity for the whole world, and that soon God would send Bahá’u’lláh. The name Báb means the gate. He was the Forerunner for Bahá’u’lláh."
Next show the drawing of the shrine of the Báb. Say:
"The Báb is buried in this beautiful shrine in Haifa, Israel, not far from where Bahá’u’lláh is buried. This shrine of the Báb is on the side of Mt. Carmel, and can be seen from anywhere in the whole city. People from around the world visit this shrine and the beautiful gardens which surround it."
Next show the drawing of the candles. Say:
"When God sends a Teacher to the world, He comes to teach us something. He comes to teach us the Laws of God. The Laws are like these candles or lights. If we are in a dark room with no light, then we will bump into things. If we have light, it gives us guidance. We won't bump into things. The Laws of God are like spiritual lights. They guide us in our life so that we will not get into difficulties. Bahá’u’lláh brings us the Laws of God for today, so that we will know how to live as God wants us to live in this time. One Law (point to the first candle) is the Law of prayer. Bahá’u’lláh tells us that we must pray daily, and He has given us hundreds of beautiful prayers to choose from. Another Law is that we must not backbite. We must not say anything bad about someone else even if it is true. We must not gossip and say
[Page 7]
unpleasant things about others. It is the worst thing for a person to do. There are many other wonderful Laws that we will learn about.
Turn to the drawing about ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. Say:
“Bahá’u’lláh was the first Divine Teacher from God to write a will before He died. In His will He appointed His oldest son ‘Abdu’l-Bahá as leader of the Bahá’í Faith after Bahá’u’lláh died. He asked all Bahá’ís to accept ‘Abdu’l-Bahá so that the Bahá’ís would have unity. The Bahá’ís did accept ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, and we accept Him today. That is why there is only one Bahá’í Faith in all the world. All Bahá’ís in every country of the world belong to the same one Bahá’í Faith, because of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.”
Turn to the drawing of the Local Spiritual Assembly. Say:
“In the Bahá’í Faith there are no priests. Instead Bahá’ís have an election, and elect nine local adult Bahá’í members. This is called the Local Spiritual Assembly. They are like parents for all the Bahá’ís of the village. They help the Bahá’ís learn more about this wonderful new Message from God, and they help the Bahá’ís live together as Bahá’ís should. If a person believes that these teachings are good and true, and they accept Bahá’u’lláh as a Messenger from God, then they are already Bahá’ís. Do you believe these things? If you do, and you would like to give your name and address, you will be a member of this wonderful new family, the family of Bahá’u’lláh. It is free, and there is no ceremony. Would you like to be a member?”
This is all that is needed to teach another and find a new Bahá’í sister or brother. When a person signs his name on the enrollment form, or if you sign it for him, it is necessary for the person to understand that he is a member of the family of Bahá’u’lláh, and we are not taking the name only to send mail. Of course he will receive mail, but that is not as important as believing in Bahá’u’lláh.
If you want to get this teaching kit, write or come to the National Bahá’í Centre, 3 Petra Street, Woodbrook, Port of Spain. Please send the names of new believers immediately.

TWO MORE JUNIOR HIGH BAHÁ’Í CLUBS are in the process of being formed. They did not know it could be done until they read of the formation of the first Junior High School Bahá’í Club at Wilmette, Illinois, written up in the August 1971 BAHÁ’Í NEWS.
THE CANADIAN BAHÁ’Í NEWS—A one-year subscription for this publication may be ordered by sending $4.00 to the Canadian BAHÁ’Í NEWS Committee, 7290 Leslie St., Willowdale, Ontario, Canada.
BAHÁ’Í NEWS is now being published on a subscription basis, as you have earlier been notified. This is your second issue of the National Bahá’í Review enclosed with The American Bahá’í. These two publications are sent free to all believers in the United States.
Please send in promptly your change of address to: National Bahá’í Office 112 Linden Avenue Wilmette, Illinois 60091
Indicate if you are a subscriber to BAHÁ’Í NEWS and/or World Order. Failure to send in your address change causes you delay in receiving your copies, causes more work in the National Center, which adds up to money which could be better used.
Assemblies receive three free copies of Bahá’í News: one for filing, one for reference one to circulate among the friends. If the Secretary is a subscriber, she will also receive her personal copy. Labels are made for the computer listing, with corrections each month. Labels are affixed and mailing done by the printer. Only single copies can be mailed in this way so these Assembly copies come separately.
Groups receive one free copy of Bahá’í News. A group is two or more believers in the same place (not an Assembly) who have selected a correspondent and have written in to the National Office stating that they wish to be considered as a group.
