"The Candle of the Covenant is like unto the Morning Star which never sets."
In the Holy Utterancesrevealed in this Great Day there is to be found an Instruction which fits every condition, an Answer from the Divine Pen to every question, for "Baha'o'llah left nothing wmsaid" either in His Holy Laws or through the Divine, Explicit and Authoritative Utterances of the Center of His Covenant.
Several of the devoted friends in the Cause who did not attain unto the "Meeting" while the Divine Servant dwelt among us, have asked for a Word from His Teachings which will comfort them evermore and which will lift the thoughts of one and all into the Realm of true spiritual consciousness. To some pilgrims who were in Abdul Baha's Presence in Acca, and who asked for a Message for a friend who was not able to make the Visit, He said:
"Though physically I have not met you, ix reality I have seen you often. Why? Because in spitit and heart I am always with you, I am inseparable from you,”
"Verily, verily, I say wmto thee, the Covenant of COD and His Testament is the Lamp with world-illuminating rays; and from the Supreme Concourse It enlightens the horizons of the earth and heavens,"
"I say unto thee the Truth: that I am with you in spirit and in heart; that I rejoice by your joy and am happy by your happiness; and hear with the Ear of Spirit your calling; and scent with the spiritual nostrils the fragrances of your garden," Abdul Baha.
Those who are in the spiritual Family of Abdul Baha (alone through His Mercy) are feeling the Spiritual Nearness and glimpsing the Realities as never before. Letters from friends in different sections of the country relate the varied

experiences of the past few months, and one gathers from them all that a deeper, inner, far more precious relization of the Covenant has been vouchsafed unto the souls
of the yearning ones. Happy indeed are those who have become SEERA confirmed and
who have reached the "invariablity of inner state".

The Annual Bahai Convention and Congress will be held this year in Chicago at the Auditorium Hotel, April 22nd to 26th. I+ is hoped that all the friends who have Within the last few months made the pilgrimage to Haifa will be present and thus bring the fragrances of holiness to us from thatHallowed Spot. After their blessed privilege of consultation with Shoghi Rabbani, the beloved Guardian of the’ Cause, they will surely return to us with illuminating instructions. Those who were in Haifa at the time of the Ascension of Abdul Baha or who have since made the Pilgrimage, are: Dr. and Mrs. Florian Krug, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Bosch, Curtis Kelsey, lirs. Elizabeth B. Nourse, lirs. Ruth Randall, Mr. Roy Wilhelm, Mr. ilountfort Mills, lirs. Corinne True, Miss Kathryn True and Mr. Chas. Mason Remey, and these souls are well mown to us all. Since we are told that "prayer is the ladder by which we mount to the nearness of GOD" -- perhaps if we are in almost constant prayer for ourselves, and likewise earnest prayers for these returned pilgrims (as their responsibility is so great), we can become receptive, and they in turn can become the "leaven". We are all looking forward to the Convention meeting with joy and fragrance, believing that "all aims are going to revolve around the one great Aim."
"Readiness is necessary in order to be a recipient of Divine Bounty." Abdul Baha.
A letter from Mr. Randall soon after one of the meetings of the Executive Committee, stated:
"The Temple work is proceeding wonderfully well, and it is glorious to see the foundation above earth.........
"We made extensive preparations for the Materials Committee in order to
. have samples of the most beautiful Temple work made in the various materials that
are suggested, so that the Convention can see the same and hear the recommendations of the Materials Committes."
- Now, just an item in regard to the so-called "Hands of Service”; one of
the activities in comnection with raising funds for the Temple. Mrs. Louise Gregory of Washington, who has charge of the work here, is enthusiastic over the results thus far achieved, and she writes that even this much has been accomplished "with only a very few of the suggestions given by Mrs. Clark acted on." She feels if the friends took up this work seriously and made it of unusual importance, trer contributing an effort in some way: either making -- or helping to sell articles made by the friends -- that perhaps $50.00 or more might be sent each month regularly from every Assembly as a result of: this service and cooperation. If the friends Wish to know isore about this work, they can write to Mrs. Gregory through the Secretary -- or addressas will be furnished upon application.

(Abavl Baha)
In the last Bulletin issued, we recorded just a few of the salient features of Mr. Lovis G. Gregory's very confirmed teaching tour across the Continent
as far as Lincoln, Nebraska. Our souls have been comforted, our hearts rejoicing

endless, and our spirits cheered as the reports have successively reached us containing glowing accounts of the spreading of the Message of the Most Great Revelation in every Center visited by our faithful and devoted brother Lovis. As the encouraging news literally poured into this "office" from day to day, we were lifted high above the world and its concerns, and truly experienced how life-imparting is the constructive work of Teaching; and understood more fully from day to day why the Beloved Master invariably very promptly replied to the letters containing good news of the spread of the Cause. His own Words so often have come to us:
"ly happiness is in these glad-tidings and victories. Praise be to GOD the confirmations of the Kingdom of ABHA are assisting. Although weary, weak and helpless, we are being assisted and supported by the bounties and confirmations of the Blessed Beauty. Who and what are we? These are the Rays from the SUN of the Beauty of ABHA, and the Light of the Supreme Horizon.”
Why has this service of Mr. Gregory's been so successful? First and foremost, perhaps, because he has arisen With all heart and soul to OBEY the Commands in his own Tablets, thus attracting unto himself the necessary confirmations. Second, it is perhaps the result of completely surrendering to the Will and Wish of the Divine Center and absolute attention to the "Focal Point"; in this another part of the answer is forthcoming. In the letters emanating from all kinds and classes of people, we find repeated reference to the humility of the teacher and his utter self-effacement. Mr. Gregory evidently belongs to the class of teachers of whom Abdul Baha said:
"They are baptized with the Power of the Holy Spirit. They have forgotter the ego and are soaring toward the Kingdom of sanctity."
His meetings were all an "Exhibition of Truth", for they were meetings in which the WORDS of the Revelators of today were promulgated. Such meetings always receive the support of the Holy Spirit.
From Lincoln, Mr. Gregory proceeded westward:to Denver, Colorado. Here our loving friends and spiritual relatives united with Mr. Gregory, and as one soul
they were at the Feet of the Center of Life daily, supplicating for the confirmations
which would mean wide open doors for service. As a result the spiritual atmosphere of the City steadily increased, and the interest of those attracted to the Cause was so great that many of the seekers followed ovr eloquent teacher from meeting to meeting, just as they followed Jenabe Fazel when he spoke in Denver last year.
If. Gregory stated in one of his letters:
"The Denver friends have been intensely active during the fortnight in arranging meetings......and their devotion is most touching. All classes have been reached and many souls are attracted. About twenty-two meetings during the period is the record."
"The first meeting in the New Assembly Room just acquired was made memorable indeéd by a Talk which touched the hearts of all. The openings included two talks at Shorter Chapel; a meeting at the-home of lirs. DeLong to an interesting group of inquirers, another meeting for inguirers at the home of ilrs. Hoyt; an address before the Literary Digest Psychology Club; the Universal Truth Center; Seventeenth Avenue Community Church; Zone-Therapy Club on Spiritual Healing; the second public Address in the Assembly Room, and other public and private meetings." ret The report-of Mrs. Elizabeth Clark, Secretary of the Assembly, is a most beautiful expression of deep gratitude for the results achieved. We can, -however, quote but briefly from it, but it will be kept sacredly with all other reports of this trip as historical data of great importance. This one paragraph alone will suffice to give the friends an idea at this time of the results and confirmations which follow consultation and co-operation in the Bahai Cause:
"Mr. Gregory reached Denver just two days after we received the staggerin: news of our Beloved's Ascension. All were cheered and comforted by this dear brother, through whom the heavenly confirmations seem to flow uninterruptedly. The believers tried, in their deep sorrow, to appreciate more fully Abdul Baha's Words concerning the time when He would be no longer with us upon this earth. The hearts

are filled with greatest longing to "rejoice His heart, satisfy His cravings, comply with His request and fulfill His anticipations", and the arrival of Mr. Gregory provided a blessed opportunity for service, in which privilege all have shared most beautifully. What Mercy and Bounty has He bestowed on us, enabling us at this time of grief to prove our love for Him in active service! But the real service has been, by His Grace, through Mr. Gregory's loving and tireless efforts."
Pueblo, Colorado, the City where suffering had been intense because of floods, was evidently specialized by the Divine One, for guidance indicated that the Most Glorious Message should be heralded there, though no Bahais lived within me gates "to prepare the way." We feel we are joy-bringers when we share even a. portion of Mr. Gregory's report on his experiences in this City:
" ...25.---GOD reised up a soul who worked with me and for the Cause like a veteran in service, Through his earnest work with that of others -- above all assisted by the Divine Favor -- meetings among the colored people have been held in the YMCA, YW.C.A., NAACP, and the AME, Churcs. All were well attended and the audiences enthusiastic, and at the final meeting last night, among those present were three Clergymen, all of whom approved of tne full Message.
"Among the white people, the First Congregstional Church and the Ministers' Union received me for Talks on Inter-racial Amity. Also through the efforis of Attorney John Adams, the City High School allowed all the time this servant wanted for a Talk on the Bahai Movement, assoeeesl Wish you might have been pre ent to see the happiness of those students over the mention of Abdul Baha and is
Teachings! You know that youngsters are not inclined to restraint when happy. I have seen nothing like the ovation they accorded since visiting Tuskegee Institute some years ago. The Superintendent of Schools, Principal, fifty-two teachers, joined in the enthusiasm, and extended a cordial invitation to return. There were about eight hundred students of High School age.”

"The most efficient capital of the Bahai teacher’is the Divine Power. With that alone he may conquer the cities of the hearts." Abdul Baha.
The astonishing way in which the Master directs the work in His Vineyard from His Station of Exaltation, is again witnessed in Salt Lake City, Utah, where there were no Bahais to assist in any activities, but, as Abdul Baha has told us?
"If ye make an effort, these lights shall shine, and this soul -refreshing breeze shall waft."
The Theosophists, who are very near to us on the point of the removal of prejudices, weicomed our faithful brother, and arranged for a meeting which was well advertised. A large and enthusiastic audience was the result, about one-third of which was colored as they had made a special effort to get the colored people to attend. The Theosophists will welcome any Bahai speaker, and if they have sufficient notice, will arrange a large meeting in the Hotel Utah.
There were four meetings in the two colored churches, and both th pastors and people seemed deeply pleased.
A Woman's Meeting, attended by very progressi ve people, was on the program for an afternoon, and Mr. Gregory records how he found it easy to tell them about the station of Baha'o'llah and Abdul Baha.
He mingled freely in this City with the Mormons, attended their church and was politely and cordially welcomed, but he did not feel guided to give them the Message.
"T pray that the bcttae Bounties may descend upon the Western States like this,.rain,”
The prayers of Abdul Baha were always answered: indeed such a prayer as the above meant that at the time of Utterance, Abdul Baha, with the Eye of the Spirit, saw its fulfillment.
SS
[Page 5]
Thus we now see the Bounties descending as Mr. Gregory travels on through
Montana -- the first stop being at Butte, the City of mining fame, Mrs. F. H.
Symonds gave perfectly splendid co-operation in this City, and was instrumental in
arranging three very effective meetings open to the public, for the most part:
the first, with the Theosophists; the second with the Spiritualists; and the third
at her own home, calling together those most attracted. The audiences were all
responsive and enthusiastic. The colored Baptist church opened its doors for all
Sunday services. |
Several Women's Clubs of the City united in arranging a large meeting at the City ¥. MC. A.
Mr. Gregory writes that "many friends of Jenabe Fazel and Mr. and Mrs. Killius attended these meetings,"
Another experience there was a visit arranged by Mr. Symonds to one of the mines, four hundred feet below ground, and the few miners present at the time listened with respectful and close attention to a brief talk.
here our enthusiastic and devoted brother, Fred Mortensen, had been paving the way for such a sesd-sowing as would rejoice the heart of every believer in the world. Mr. Mortensen is interested in just one thing, namely: “how to flood the dry fields of the hearts" with the Water of Life, and he determined to have an intensive spiritual campaign. A portion of his report of the work follows:
"The week of Brother Gregory's visit has come to a close, and it is evident that the blessings of the Center of the Covenant have been peured upon this community through the presence of the illustrious Lovis......-From the moment of his arrival he found Helena no place for rest.......The first meeting was on Sunday afternoon in the Colored Baptist church to a large and enthusiastic audience, the “subject being the ‘Oneness of Mankind.'.....To me it was as clear as the sum that Abdul Baha was the Speaker, and Gregory the instrument of contact. The Power of the Covenant was so great that no seeker could deny; and those souls attended every lectury thereafter. Every lecture (of which we had eight in six days) was well attended and all the comments I heard were simply those of extreme contentment and ’ satisfaction.....Among the public lectures were those given at the Unitarian Church; the Y.M.C.A., another at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Miller; one at Edison Hall, and also another at the Truth Center.......... !
"The lecturing was but one part of the work here, for I kept Mr. Gregory so busy writing articles for the newspapers that he mast have remained up and at 4 work most of the nights." 1
An excerpt from Mr. Gregory's report about the Helena work, follows:
"Fred Mortensen, young, strong, devoted -- led me such a pace that temporarily the use of my right arm was lost through writing so much and so fast. Truly he is 'Frederick the Great.' The Montana Editor who gave so much publicity
is a Texas Democrat. I met him personally and fowd him very congenial and ready 4 to help in every way possible. The great Jenabe Fazel whom he met last year prepared the way."
The Press work accomplished through the combined efforts of Mr. Mortesen and Mr. Gregory was a wonderful service, for some of the articles were widely read through the very large circulation which some of the papers have in that State. Mr. Mortensen is a great believer in "the Power of the Press" and he has proven many times his ability in getting splendid articles into the papers -- articles Which have carried the seeds of Truth far and wide.
"Through the Lights of the Covenant the world will become illwained."

Arriving next in the State of Washington, the friends in Spokane, the first City visited, arose as one soul to co-operate with the radiant teacher in proclaiming the Universal Principles and the Power of the Holy Words of GOD. The Banner of the Covenant was heid aloft, and the Love of the Center of the Covenant cemented the hearts.
One of the largest and most interesting meetings was in "The Church at Spokane". Dr. McInturf, the pastor, is a Southerner and a relative of the present Governor of Tennessee. The lecture there was on the "Seven Valleys", and the Pastor, in introducing Mr. Gregory, prayed earnestly for Universal Brotherhood. He and his congregation were very enthusiastic all through oe lecture, and showed their appreciation by a rising vote of thanks.
Mr. Gregory's report of the work covers many points, and he adds:
"The Hall in the Rookery Building, the Colored Baptist Church, the Spokane Hotel on two occasions, three homes, have all accommodated gatherings for teaching, making about thirteen meetings during the nine days stay there."
An excerpt from Mrs. Isabelle Campbell's letter as Corresponding Secretary of the Assembly, will give an idea of the appreciation of the friends: >
"The inspiration and help Mr. Gregory brought to the Bahai friends in Spokane cannot be measured. Our hearts have been deeply moved, and we feel spurred on to greater services and sacrifice, We wish to do our little, but in the same spirit of love and humility with which our dear brother serves..........iany souls have heard the Message and Glad-tidings for the first time, and we hope to be able to water these seeds so wonderfully sown, by our deeds as well as words.........We all love Mr. Gregory very much, and the pleasant memories of these nine days will ever be cherished; it has been one of the most blessed times in the history of the Cause in Spokane."
"When the tree is firmly rooted it will bear fruit." The fruit of Mr. Gregory's stay in Seattle, shows how firmly is the tree rooted in that City. . Judging from all the activities of the friends, the wealth of blessed services ever emanating from the Bahai Literature Center, and the sacrificial efforts and carnest endeavors of all our loved ones there, we feel Mr. Gregory had the joy of associat~ ing with a strenuous group of Behais in this strenuous Western City. The program, circulated widely, gives only an idea of the plan for continued services. Indeed, as Mr. Gregory so aptly puts it, some "seemed quite willing to hold an all day meeting every day."..........Mr. J. H. Hovugen's shop is the Assembly Center". In another letter Mr. Gregory further reports:
"GOD has abundantly blessed and confirmed our efforts at Seattle. There have been a total of about twenty-four meetings during the cight days stay........ Five of these were held on Sunday; one for the friends only; another meeting was a banquet served for about forty-five people and with the utmost abundance, joy and fragrance, truly the Table of Abdul Baha. The other three meetings were with the Colored Y.W.C.A., the Methodist and Baptist Churches. The colored people here are an unusually intelligent and progressive group, and they seem aflame with interest and enthusiasm over the Message and Teachings.........Some brilliant souls have ~ arisen among them who will, I hope, become teachers. Mr. Henry C. Bell and Mr. Robert Roberts are especially worthy of mention. Among the women there are so many that it is impossible to recall all their names.
"Through the intense activity of Mr. J. H, Hougen, Mr. Richardson, Mrs. Mabel Geary and Mrs. Gloria Baker, the contact has been made with other attracted groups. The friends are firm, united and happy. ..........Among those attracted is a bright young Japanese."
A letter from the Seattle Assembly, through Miss Alma Yann, expresses the dcep gratitude of the friends.
"..........Words cannot express what Mr. Gregory's visit in Seattle has

meant -~ not only to the Bahais, but to the whole community, The spirit of wmity and harmony manifested was unusual. Our dear brother is such a wonderfully illumined soul; we just kept him going at ‘top-notch speed,‘ sending out his bright rays to
at least two audiences a day and sometimes as many as four..........He was always
so Willing and gracious about everything, that we just felt we wanted him to stay
in Seattle all the time..........We need. these enlightened souls out here so much."
As we arrive in Vancouver, B.C., through the medium of the reports, and share in the joys of service there, we think to the precious souls who have in the past served there so faithfully and well. All will recall how Miss Marion Jack wen* to Vancouver to live for several months, Mrs. Laura Luther likewise has rendered most radiant services, our dear George Latiner who has helped on.the pioneering wor of the Kingdom in that section, Mr. Collin, the faithful new server whom all the friends love so dearly, and lastly our eri ivtent’ and heavenly teacher Jenabde Fazel, who paved the way with Ahmad, for the lovely work of our devoted teacher of today. One after another these heralds of the Kingdom of GOD have raised their voices’ in meetings both public and private, and "their voices will ring throughout the future centuries and will be immortal and age-abiding."
A portion of Mr. Gregory's report follows: iegetiie -++..A meeting was arranged the first night at Unity Hall. The talk on Harmony of Religion and Science was received very happily and prepared the way for others. Mrs, Lavra Luther, Mr. Collin, Mrs. Monros, Mrs. Harvey and others of the shining circle, have been intensely active in arrangements f6r meetings........ Such wonderful love and kindness flow from the hearts of these dear souls, "His love within them exists and cannot be concealed." .
"The second meeting was with the Theosophists. It was a small meeting, but seemed to set many aflame. ..c.ds.ec-<0i<
"The third meeting was an opportwmity to address about. seventy-five or more Chinese, most of them students. The talk was on "The Ideals of the New Age." They showed great appreciation..........A Japanese, through whose efforts the meeting was arranged, appeared to fine advantage...... iat cis tas te
"The fourth meeting was held at the Temple of Truth, aid the last meeting was likewise held at the same place. ...ciees sec cceeeus
"The Little Assembly feels confident and assured that their numbers will be increased by this series of meetings in which the Hand of Divine Bounty was revealed."
Very recently a letter has been received from Mr. Austin Collin, giving us a most heavenly account of Mrs. Laura Iuther's stay in Vancouver, following up the work of Mr. Gregory. This letter contains the fragrant news of the formation of an Assembly in Vancouver, the first Bahai Assembly in Western Canada. He tells us of the joy and love amongst the friends and of their prayers for steadfastness. It would be a sweet and precious service if the Secretary of each Assembly in the éountry would write a letter of welcome to this new Assembly, addressing the letter to Mr. Austin Collin, sending your first letter in care of the Secretary of the Teaching Committee, who will furnish the proper address, then in the future iir. Collin can write to each one direct.
Blessed and much beloved are the friends in this new Assembly. How sweet was the Divine Message sent to an Assembly by Abdul Baha:
"Give My salutations and praise to that Assembly who are firm in the Covenant of GOD, and say:
"'O ye whom GOD hath chosen from among those who are called — ye that
many are called, but few chosen); upon whom He caused the evident Light to descend;
whom He guided into the Right Path and to whom He gave the Glad-tidings of the grear
success -- ye must be sincere and faithful, ye must follow the Ordinances which
refer to the Covenant of GOD, which is the Solid Edifice."

All the reports from Portland, Oregon, the next City visited on this remarkable teaching tour, seem to begin and end with this precious tribute to the. severed teacher: "The face of brother Louis. simply shines with the Divine Effulgences, and he has captivated the hearts of his hearers."
Mr. Gregory's report is full of beautiful details of every part of the work in this City, but we can only share it in part:
" .eeee.e.,Truly this journey is, through the Favor of Abdul Baha, confirmed....-.....2his vast country is very wonderful, but the souls more so. I am most grateful to all the friends whose co-operation has made it possible. The friends here have been intensely active, and the harmony complete..........The Latimers have been the soul of Loyalty and zeal and all have co-operated -- some friends coming even from a distance to attend the meetings. All elements of ,the local population have been reached, and apparently there is a great attraction of SOULS esas wwes
Although time and space almost preclude the recording of any details of the work, we feel the urge to share Mr. George Latimer's report'of the visit of Mr. Gregory to Portland more — because there ave items of interest which will be of immense value to some of the friends, and we suimnit it with the hope that it will have the necessary biden thie effect and be the ineans of once again calling ene to the importance for and need of trained teachers. Please read this
report carefully, and see if it will not strike home to the heart of some who may innately have the capacity to become teachers, and who will arise to AASLGS the Great Divine Plan of the Ages:
"Portland has again been the recipient of the Divine Bestowals and heavenly out-pourings through the coming of brother Louis Gregory. His visit was at the exact period, but a year later, that the historic tour of Jenabe Fazel and Mirza Ahmad centered in Portland, and in looking back at the two memorable occasions one is reminded of the biblical quotation that he was ‘after the order of . Melchizedek' for truly brother Louis emulated in every way the methods and teachings of the glorious Fazel and he left the imprint of the spirit deep in the heart of Portland. The only thing that ever should be changed in an event of this kind is the shortness of the visit.
"Brother Louis arrived on the fourth of February from a happy visit tc the growing new Assembly of Vancouver and made his home with Mr. and lirs. Tom May. He began his week with a lecture on the "Unity of Religions” in the First Divine Science Church at their Sunday morning service. This church has become a home for Bahai speakers and the eloquent and scholarly message cf brother Louis was received
_With deepest consideration. In the afternoon he was the guest of the Weed family for dinner and in the evening the friends called to welcome him; -- a veritable Feast, both material and spiritual ensued, and a heavenly vista of the coming week was revealed. On Monday afternoon he spoke to a large Psychology Club in the Public Library on "The Seven Valleys," and the evening was spent as the guest of Mrs. Cannady, the progressive editor of the Advocate, the local colored newspaper, and her friends.
"The Theosophical Society chose as their subject for Tuesday evening, "Racial Unity" and gave Mr. Gregory a most attentive and appreciative audience for they stand very strongly against any kind of race orej:cice. Wednesday noon, he was the guest at the weekly luncheon of the Oregon Social Workers and his subject was "Interracial Amity." This is a. most progressive body of people from all vocations in life, working for the social upliftment of the community and this meeting was especially notable for it was only within the past two months that a colored lady, an old personal friend of Mr. Gregory, had been admitted to membership. In the evening he talked on "The Harmony between Religion and Science", (a masterpiece) at the Metaphysical Library under the auspices of Mrs. Nettie Taylor Kloh, a true friend of the Bahais.
Thursday evening a unity feast was held’at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nash.
[Page 9]
a on
It being the ninth, the talk reyolved around the Mashrak'Ul Azkar and the necessity of linking up the teaching work with this divine edifice, with the call for all to. arise and serve. Great love eminated from brother Louis' heart and was reflected by the friends. Friday afternoon he spoke before the Old Rose Club in the Y.W.C.A, (colored) on the "Equality between Men and Women." A beautiful response was given to him. In the evening he spoke at our regular weekly meeting on "What is a Bahai." This talk is so penetrating and appealing that I hope all the Bahais will have the pleasure of hearing it at the coming Convention at Rizwan in Chicago.
Saturday night he was the guest at the home of the Benjamins, formerly of Washington, D. C. Sunday morning he chose as his subject for lirs. Kloh's services in the Church of the Soul, "The Four Stages in Man's Growth." Again the room was packed and many sat and stood in the hall. In the evening he spoke twice at the Bethel if, E. Church, first to the Epworth League and later to the Congregation on "Universal Peace." It was very evident that his message penetrated the hearts for. many of the faces were seen in the audience the following night when he was the guest and principal speaker at the Lincoln-Douglas Memorial meeting held by the Portland Branch N,A.A.C.P. in the First A.M.E. Zion Church, under the presidency of the Rev. Moore. His subject was "The Abandonment of Prejudice," and a more convincing appeal on this most fundamental Bahai principle has never been heard in Portland. After this remarkable meeting, the friends of this society for the betterment of the colored race, prepared, in true Bahai love and spirit, a splendid feast of good things to eat and all were cordially invited to meet Mr. Gregory and partake of their bountiful hospitality.
The wweetings in the two colored churches were remarkable and beyond description. It was thrilling! Brother Louis face simply shone with radiance while he was speaking, for before he came it was quite a question whether we would be received by the colored people.
With this meeting the all too short visit of brother Louis came to a close in Portland. Throughout the week during his spare moments, he called on sick friends and Bahais whe could not get out to hear his aduiirable talks. His visit again brings to the attention of the Teaching Committee the great necessity of increasing the nuuber of such tours around the circuit of this vast country. Instead of being an annual event for the western asseriblies, we want to have them at least semi-annually and later quarterly.
Words cannot express the joy and happiness in our hearts for this brief visit and the confirmations have already appeared from the spiritual contact with brother Louis. His steadfast devotion to the Cause of the Covenant of God, his hunility and selflessness, his radiance and eloquence, and his great love impressed all his hearers, and upon his departure this benediction he left us, that he was a living example of: f ,
"The science of sociability
"The nobility of deeds
"The sweetness in speech."
In one of Mr. Gregory's letters, may, rather in several, do we find these words: "So often do I ask Abdul Baha not to let me forget that I am dust." This is the really true spirit and attitude and emanates from the pure heart of a severed soul. We are all "dust" and cannot even hold up our heads for an instant save through the Mercy of the Infinite. "In relation to the Center of the Covenant, all are equal." Distinction is for those who KNOW the Center of the Covenant; and who they are, He, that Divine Center, alone kmows. Abdul Baha has said:
"The Covenant of GOD is like the sum -- the brilliance and Light of the Covenant radiates and shines forth from the faces of those who are firm in It."
As we travel the shining pathway of this glorious service with Louis
Gregory, we can see that the Power of the Covenant -~- that Mysterious Pows -- has
[Page 10]
oe pe
been operative at all times. The Divine Center of Life is o'ershadowing the server in the front ranks, and this manifests ever more clearly from day to day.
The succession of meetings in San Francisco and the Bay Cities, far exceeded all hopes and expectations. Mr. Gregory writes that:
Ws ...2--.2.the colored friends have been reached through successful meetings in their churches in San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley, also through other organizations. Two public meetings have been held in Santa Clara Hall, the beautiful home of the local Assembly in the Native Sons' Building. Other meetings were arranged, among them the one at the home of Leroy Ioas at his home in Burlingame. The most brilliant of all the meetings probably was the one under the joint auspices of the Cosmopolitan and Chinese Student's Clubs at the University of California. Mrs. Frankland was largely instrumental in this arrangement. Chinese, Hindoos, Americans -- white and colored -- made a picturesque and radiant gathering. They received the Glad-tidings with joyous acclaim. It was the meeting I enjoyed uost. Mrs. Cooper, Dr. D'Evelyn, Dr. and Mrs. E. D. Shaw (whose guest I have been during my stay) Mr. and Mrs. J. B, Shaw, the Franklands, the Rabbs -- all of the friends have been perfectly lovely to me, as well as not a few strangers. It has been the golden welcome of the Golden West with a new significance and power through the Might of the Covenant and wderstanding of the Mysteries. I am most happy and grateful as well."
Mrs. Ella Cooper's observations on this important visit are of especial interest:
"How I longed to write you an account of Mr. Gregory's fragrant visit here. Truly he is a rare, severed soul acting only under the supreme guidance every moment and confirmed in a marvellous way. Had we a hundred teachers as qualified as he is, the Message would set all America on fire, and racial prejudice would vanish into thin air! His talks are inspired, because he never deviates one hair's breadth from the Pure WORD. He gives the people the Water of Life, and fills them with joy and thanksgiving. Indeed his discourses are like a compilation of the Heavenly Utterances put together by the fewest possible of his own words. Would that many others might learn this self-effacement from him! Our Asseribly was blessed and refreshed by his all too brief visit, and we shall never cease to he thankful that GOD sent him to California."
And Dr. D'Evelyn adds still another word for us about this service. He says: “Louis Gregory's advent and sojourn was masterful, helpful and beneficient. He is a chosen teacher."
"The friends here are radiant in their mity and attraction, and a very general program has been arranged to cover about ten days" so Mr. Gregory writes us from Los Angeles. "Glendale, Hollywood, Pasadena, have all co-operated with the Los Angeles friends. The general program arrenged is being worked out with meetings at Y.M.C.A., churches (white and colored) various homes, also with the Theosophists, two meetings one of which will be at their general headquarters, and they have given us to understand that they want the full Message. Ahmad is here with his well known loving spirit and is co-operating very effectively........... The unity, love and understanding of the friends is wonderful. They have the Instructions of Abdul Baha and obey. This accounts for all their heavenly harmony. lirs. Helen Barbour and her daughter have put their machine at my disposcl which has been of inmense help in covering the vast spaces of these adjacent Cities. They have also, with all the other friends, co-operated and helped in every way. No one who has ever been here, can ever forget the Golden West. This is an experience for which I shall ever be grateful. Am sending a line about the work to Jenabe Fazel. Ahnad reports Jenabe returned to his residence City of Resht and wmited with his family.
I have sent from time to time reports of the progress of this teaching journey which GOD has wonderfully blessed, only because of the interest and

happiness of the friends. Otherwise I know it is all the Will and Power of Abdul
Baha which brought success. Again and again and again I ask Him to make me remember
that I am dust, acknowledging my absolute non-existence in that Court. The Love of
Abdul Baha is the sole magnet that renders life possible."
The following report from Mirza Ahmad Sohrab is quite characteristic:
"The other day I went over to Pasadena and noticed on the way how the hills and country had become luxuriantly verdant, havinz in their lap a joyous welcome for the bride of spring. Laughter was in the sixy, and the birds throats trilled with golden songs. Brother Gregory was one of these songsters of the Kingdom of © j ABHA. He flew over Los Angeles for a number of days and every day he rose higher and sang clearer. Emulating his example many souls flew after him and rejoiced with i him by beholding the wealth of heavens and the majesty of Truth. Before many or- . ganizations, both white and colored, he discoursed on the Revelation of the New Day and unveiled the Mystery of the Kingdom, Every one loved his universality, admired his ideals, and com.ented on his spirit of devotion, sincerity and spiritual humility. Mrs. and Miss Barbour served from morning until night with their automobile, going-from one meeting to another. These two sisters were self-sacrificing........ Mr. Gregory brought to friends and strangers a fresh stimulus of service; he created in the hearts a more intense desire for the Love of GOD and the diffusion of the Fragrances of the Kingdom. He was the embodiment of gentleness and the beauty and refinement of spirit.........It is hoped that many teachers endowed with such rare qualities will follow one another in the dissemination of the seeds of the Kingdom. ~+++-+-It has been a great and rare privilege to meet this "son of Abdul Baha" who in forgetting the "self" has found "GOD,".........
Leaving Sunny California, Mr. Gregory travelled over the Southern route ofar East as Phoenix, Arizona.
Here the Assembly is small but radiant, all seemed to be in the utmost joy, and the teacher and server received a warm welcome. The lethodist Minister gave his pulpit for both the morning and evening services, and there were meetings daily.
Oklahoma City --whith may be described as both Southern and Western -has become spiritually illumined. The Theesophists invited Mr. Gregory to lecture for them and they asked particularly for the Bahai Message. Three large meetings were also held in the churches of this City. A
, rom Tulsa, Oklahoma, the so-called "Riot City" Mr. Gregory writes the following: - "Great is GOD! The Might of the Covenant has 2 new and astonishing Power in every City. You may recall that last sumer this City was shaken by a terrible riot in which there was great loss of life on both sides, and nearly the entire "colored section" was destroyed by incendiary fires. It seemed quite likely then that such tragic suffering might be the cause of creating capacity for Spiritual Truth. Now this seems realized."
The Theosophists, Spiritualists, Bible Students Association and other organizations were addressed; also Talks were given to the prisoners of both races at the City Jail; another talk at the Public Schools, also at two churches. And Mr. Gregory adds: "Strange to say, nearly all of these meetings have been attended by people of both races.........-All the people have responded very happily, and have expressed gratification over the Glorious Truths and Message. It is real joy to be with them..........1 am as safe here as anywhere else in creation, for, after all, the only Safety is the Power of the Covenant, which is wlinmited."
The above is just a partial record of one of the most brilliant Bahai
Teaching Tours we have ever been privileged to have in this country, and all ist

admit that this remarkable seed-sowing was accomplished alone through the confirmations streaming down from the ABHA Kingdom. We see in it also the fulfillment of the Master's Words "that Mr. Gregory should become the cause of the guidance of both races." Divine Wisdo: requires the effort of sacrifice on the part of the creatures. The Divine Rerlity does all the rest.
Mr. Grezory will complete his itinerary, continuing his journcy Eastward, speaking in Topeka, Kansas; Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri; Springfield and Jrbana, Illinois; arriving in Chicago, April 22nd in time for the Convention.
An excerpt from one of Mr. Gregory's letters is most important to share with the friends at this time and we hope it will be given the most prayerful consideration. He says:
"I would to GOD that there were a thousand souls in the field raising the OBL aaS 6 uss wise .-Can the Toaching Conmaittee do anything to arouse the activities of the friends in teaching, whether local or travelling work? The wore we increase the number of Bahais, the easier will it be to complete the Mashrek'Ul Azkar and carry on the other activities of the Cause. All ought to be mindful of the powerful confirmations that bring results today with every sincere effort."
Speaking of the American believers, Abdul Baha once said:
"I pray to the Blessed Perfection that He will so turn their faces to the Covenant, that all America may be enlightened by the brightness of their Light."
The Eastern part of the United States has not been left entirely without a travelling "Spiritual Farmer", for Mr. Albert R. Vail has been "raised up” and trained by the Divine Trainer and instructed through the Creative WORD, which WORD ho knows so well that when he speaks spiritual waves are set in motion and something happens to the souls and hearts of the people. Abdul Bah2 requested Mr. Vail to spend sometime in Washington, so accordinsly he journeyed to this City in January and dwelt among us for several weeks. "Celestial strains from the ABHA Kingdom roused" many of the people of this City. Every day and every night there were meetings, public or private; talks either to friends or strangers. Mr. Vail was the guest of Mrs. Parsons, and a series of afternoon meetings at her home awakened many from the stupor of indifference, and through successive ministretions brought them to a state of enkindlement. The prepared souls drew nearer and nearer, and finally several were confirmed to enter in the Great Sheepfold of today. Nearly every friend in the Assembly arranged group meetings in different parts of the City, and Miss Juliet Thompson, who has spent the winter here, was very active also in arranging several attractive group meetings. The confirming power of Mr. Vail's services was continually demonstrated. This is because Abtul Baha's Creative Word is taking effect, for He has said of him "the sovls whom this Glorious person teaches really become reborn."
The Washington Assembly could show their appreciation in no greater way than to urge Mr, and Mrs. Vail to come here and reside for some time, so that the blessed work so marvellougly started might develop and grow in the National Capitol wntil this City should truly become "a paradise of glory."
From here Mr. Vail proceeded to Baltimore, where the friends had arranged an intensive program for his short stay in that City. The consultation and co-opayation was perfect, and all were made happy by his visit.
Then Philadelphia was favored. The friends in this City are ever keenly
alive on the subject of teaching and always arise as one soul to co-operate with
visiting teachers. A series of meetings both public and private brought the wealth
of the Kingdom into the homes and hearts of all who were fortunate enongh to be
served by our loving and illumined teacher. The way had been wonderfully prepared
for him at various times by many faithful teachérs. He continually contacted with

many who had previously met Mr. Roy Williams, and also our renowned and revered Jenabe Fazel.
Why do we hear from all parts of the country about the souls who were attracted by Jenabe Fazel's Talks? The seeds he so faithfully scattered are being watered by loving friends everywhere, and the harvest forthcoming in the future will be the glorious reward.
Dr. Edna McKinney of Philadelphia shared an excerpt from a Table to her from Abdul Baha, dated October 8th, 1921 which tells us once again of the confirmed services of His honor, Jenabe Fazel:
"His Honor, Fazel, was a man detached from this world, attracted to the Kingdom of ABHA and inflamed by the Fire of the Love of GOD. Therefore he became confirmed in the service of the Kingdom."
A few persoral visits were made in New York City on the way North, after which Mr. Vail fulfilled his promise to serve the friends in Boston. Here a warm welcome always awaits the teachers, and Mr. Vail wrote glowingly of the splendid activities arranged, and the harmony and love and kindness of the friends.
The following excerpt from one of Mr. Randall's letters, gives a glimpse of the work:
"We had a wonderful visit here with Albert Vail. He spoke six times, and met many of the friends. All have been exhilarated and more closely wmited by his wonderful spirit and heavenly talks. At our regular public meeting on Sunday evening, the hall was packed to overflowing, and Albert spoke on "Cormunication with the Unseen World and Divine Inspiration." There were probably more than one hundre new people, and they lingered and talked with Albert and other Bahais present, and all seemed very much pleased and illumined by the meeting. The Assembly life in Boston is growing rapidly, and our meetings are beautiful and confirming. Just before the Master ascended, He wrote to Ruth (Mrs. Randall) that the Boston Assemb? would be greatly assisted and helped this year: and already the evidences are appec ing,”
Abdul Baha once said about the friends in Canada: "They must continually think of the available means in the diffusion of the Fragrances of the Cause. For the hours devoted to such Ideals are productive of wonderful results." So the. beloved friends in Montreal looked forward with longing hearts and joyous expectancy to the time when Mr. Vail could favor them with a visit and assist them in this Day of Deeds -- "to desire, to know, to act, to work, to do, to stand, to cry, to serve, to help, to inspire, to strive, to advance, to attain and to teach!" Mrs. May Maxwell has forwarded to us a brief report on the work which we are sharing herewith:
"When the Divine Beloved was in Montrecl, He spoke of the wonderful love and hospitality He had been shown by the people in all the countries where He had travelled and sojourned; of the toleration, receptivity, courtesy and kindness showered upon Him everywhere.
- "He spoke. of His freedom to travel and meet all the people and serve mankind, in contrast to the long years of His blessed life spent in prison; then with
His heart ravishing smile He said: 'but those were the best days! those days spent in the prison of God, in the real servitude to God, in sacrifice in the path of God, those were the days of divine happiness and perfect beatitude.' Then he added with His mysterious glance 'these days are the fruits of those!
"So when we all entered the tomb with the Blessed One, and the dark night of His separation fell upon our souls, when we seemed to be buried under the earth of a sorrow too great for mortals to bear, and from which it seemed we never could arise -- gradually through His supreme Martyrdom and the crushed hearts of His lovers, a new and deeper consciousness was born, and in the ficw of that inner consciousness, that fiery emanation of His Spirit and Presence in our nidst, the souls began to resurrect.

"The hour of our greatest suffering became the hour of our greatest spiritual triwsph and many wany souls were guided to the Font of Life,
"The beloved ones in Montreal longed for teachers, longed for the intimate love and co-operation of their fellow Bahais everywhere, longed for that deep and consoling contact with those hearts which are onewith theirs. “
"In such an atmosphere seed could be sown, light diffused, and such meetings held as was realized when Albert Vail visited ther.
"Two meetings were held in Mechanics' Hall, where Mr. Maxwell acted as chairman, one was held in the Church of the Messiah and many other meetings both general and intimate, in which the sweet Bahai children had their part. Then this
teacher of God, this beloved harbinger of the Covenant, went on to sow and irrigate .
other fields."
We look toward Toronto, Canada, these days with a heart full of spiritual love, and constantly gather from all the reports coming to us, that our Supreme Lord has baptized with the Water of Life some radiant and heavenly souls in that City who responded to the Call and who are being "submerged in the Sea of the Knowledge of GOD."
Dr. Watson and Miss Margaret Laurence have done their utmost to arrange a program for Mr. Vail's stay among them, and they were indeed successful and confirmed for Mr. Vail writes:
"The visit to Toronto was quite thrilling. Fivé joyous meetings. At the Theosophical Hall over three hundred were present, and many attracted to the subsequent meetings. The newly attracted ones in that City were ordering about Sixty Dollars worth of books. Dear Dr. Watson as well as Miss Laurence have done wonderful work in telling the Message. A steadily growing circle is interested."
On the way West, Mr. Vail stopped in London, Canada, for a beautiful meeting, and also in Detroit where he found the friends radiant and zealous.
It is his earnest wish that the travelling teachers stop in these Cities as often*as they possibly can, and in fact Mr. Vail writes:
"The call for teachers is so great one stands absolutely overwhelmed at the opportunity and the need.”
"My hope is ‘this: That the outbreathing of the Holy Spirit be inspired into your hearts, that your tongues begin to reveal the mysteries and. to expound the meaning and the truth of the Holy Books. May the friends become physicians... esseeeeBe sure that the blessing of the Holy Spirit will descend upon you and that the Hosts of the Kingdom will come to your aid.” Abdul Baha.
A letter sometime ago from Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ives tells of their detertination to go forth as heralds of the Kingdom in the widdle Western and Southern part of the country. Doors opened which made it possible for them to start this teaching tour, and in such a way that they earn their living as they travel from place to place. They felt the great importance of watering the seeds sown by Jenabe Fazel and others, and so they left everything to arise in this service. They write among other things: "Since the funds are so limited, and thus it is not possible to send out the many teachers that are needed, we have thought that this may be the way that the teachers in the field may be augmented, working their way as they go, according to what they can do."
They stay long enough in each City to spread the Message widely, and in some places to confirm a sufficient number of souls to start an Assembly. The fir: City visited was Pittsburgh, where through some splendid publicity work, several doors openei, and they were enabled to reach many in private homes and also at public meetings at the Theosophical Headquarters.
That these lovely souls are being confirmed as they travel on their way
[Page 15]

is sure and certain, else success would not attend their efforts, From a recen letter we quote the following:
"Both in Buffalo, N.Y., and Youngstown, Ohio, we had beautiful experiences with many new souls; in the former place an Assembly has been formed.........Nine teen days were spent in Buffalo, and during that time meetings were held in private, homes or we addressed different organizations and Societies; altogether having "Me. seventeen meetings. And in Yowmgstown, during our three weeks, nearly as many meetBTiS eraiainleioiclels We have found openings always in the New Thought Organizations, Theosophical Societies, Unitarian Churches, Psychology Clubs, and many other Cluods. In Cleveland, Ohio, talks were given before a number of Clubs and in two churches.
Now we are preparing to start Westward with the hope that we will reach Chicago for the Convention."
"The world of the Covenant is like wmto the Blessed Tree which is growing beside the river of the Water of Life in the utmost delicacy and beauty, and day by day it is developing and adding to its verdancy." Abdul Baha.
The following are some news items furnished by Miss Martha Root:
"Only the Supreme Concourse knows the wonderful, eternal seed-sowing that Senor and ifirs. Gnocchi, Leonora Holsapple and the other dear friends in Santos, Brazil, are doing. A letter received last week says they have just finished translating "Paris Talks" in Portuguese, but they have no funds yet to get it printed. Every day this translating of the Creative Word goes forward there.
"Addresses are made in educational and other societies and they expect ‘to be represented in both the National Educational and National Esperanto Conventions which are to be held this year in connection with the great Exposition of Brazil.
"iWany articles have been written by these friends and published in the best newspapers and magazines. A beautiful writer in Brazil, a woman, has become a Bahai through the friendships of the Bahai group and she writes and speaks for the Cause. It is quite likely that in the next twenty-five years South America will have made as great progress in the Bahai Cause as the United States has made in the last quarter of a century.
“Abdul Baha said: 'Praise be to God the Call of the Kingdom has been received in South America and the sseds of Guidance have been sowed in those cities and regions. Certainly the heat of the Sun of Reality, the rain of the Eternal Bounty and the Breeze of the Love of God will make them germinate; have confidence!
"Beautiful letters have come from new souls in different countries. Miss Oriane Drollet of Papeete, Tahiti, Society Islands sends love.
"A man from one of the smaller cities of the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, S.A., writes that in some way he has found a pamphlet of the Bahai Revelation. He says: 'I find the exposition liberal, honest. Can you illuminate my soul? I will say yes. And do it, because wmtil I die I will make an effort to work for it. Please send your instructions and tell the amount the books are.’
"Frequent letters come from Buenos Aires, Argentina and Valparaiso, Chili.
"Friends in Germany wrote for addresses in Brazil’ that their friends in Rio Grande de Sul might contact with the Bahais in other parts of that country.
“A little Bahai brochure comes from Mendoza, Argentina, printed and sent out through the courtesy of the Theosophists.
"Friends need not be discouraged if they do not receive answers to their letters and literature. Most of these people cannot write English. They hesitate to send an wmegramnatical letter, just as we are often afraid to write in Portuguese, Esperanto, Spanish, French, because we do not write them perfectly. Abdul Baha has said: 'Thou art sowing a seed that shall in the long rm, give rise to thousands of harvests.'
NA Professor in a Canadian University writes splendidly for the Cause and asks where he can get twenty-five blue booklets to give his friends.
