Bahá’í Service for the Blind Needs Help
Each new blind Bahá’í that we hear about receives gifts from the Committee of the following items: Bahá’í Prayers and Occasional Prayers and our lists in Braille and/or our Introductory Tape which contains: Your Experience as a Bahá’í, The Meaning of Worship and some prayers and other selections. Unfortunately we do not hear about some of these new believers for weeks or even months after their declaration and then through a friend or relative who may not even be a Bahá’í. Meanwhile, the new believer has had to “make do” with firesides as a deepening medium. Please, friends, when your assembly (or teaching committee or individual) takes in a blind believer report this fact to Bahá’í Service for the Blind. Give name and address, whether youth or adult, and if possible the following additional information: Does he or she read Braille? If so, what grade? Just ask, the blind person will know what grade Braille he reads. Has he a tape—recorder or the use of one?
We urgently need more sighted Certified Braillists. If any believers are already so trained, we ask them to offer their services to the Committee. Believers who long to serve the Faith but are physically unable to
engage in active teaching work might consider taking a course in Braille transcribing in order to become better qualified to help in this work. They could do this either by correspondence from the Library of Congress or through the Committee secretary who is a certified teacher of transcribing. In either case, the course is given free. Qualifications needed: A good knowledge of English usage, reasonably good eyesight, great patience and perseverance, and time to devote to the work.
Also urgently needed are blind proofreaders of Braille. The charge for professional proofreaders is beyond our means. And not by any means all readers of Braille make good proofreaders. Qualifications needed: Knowledge of correct Braille (English Braille, American Edition 1959), the ability and willingness to read critically, finding and noting errors either in type or in Braille.

Bahá’í Groups Should Elect Correspondent
Since every Bahá’í group “constitutes a vital resource in the national and international Bahá’í community,” and is “a reservoir from which future local assemblies are to be formed,” it is important for them to organize early in each Bahá’í year and designate a correspondent whose name, address and telephone number should be given promptly to the National Bahá’í Office, 112 Linden Ave., Wilmette, Illinois 60091
By this means it will be possible for vital communications to flow rapidly between the national headquarters of our Faith and the individual Bahá’ís who are two to eight in number within a single area of jurisdiction. (See Bahá’í Community pages 3-4)
